AMVIV Detailing Clinics with OctaneGuy

Ok, since we probably got more people interested in car care over here than in the AMVIV thread, I'm starting at thread here to get some feedback on what you would like to learn.

To keep things manageable, I'm thinking of holding 1 hour sessions at $25/person. (You can lose $25 in a couple of minutes in the casino and get nothing in return )

Classes would probably have between 5 and 10 people. Size would partially be dependent on popularity.

As far as class topics, they might include one or several of the following:
  1. How to photograph the details (not just about taking pictures in focus, but properly documenting before and after)
  2. Recognizing what can be fixed by hand or machine and what cannot
  3. Daily maintenance
  4. Going beyond the PC DVD--i.e. taping the MINI, using the PC on the MINI
  5. Hands on with detailing clay and playing with various types
  6. How to wash your MINI when running water isn't available?
  7. Proper way to use the PC (hands on)
  8. Spot clinic (bring me your worst defect, and I'll see if I can fix it, lol)
  9. Reformatting (dispelling the myths--open forum)
  10. 20 minute Engine detailing
  11. Interior detailing (removing scuffs, cleaning leather)
  12. all of the above items are stuff that's spewing from my brain--I can't think anymore. Please tell me what YOU want to learn about. I'm open to just about anything.

Btw, I expect to be representing DetailersParadise at AMVIV, so I will have Prima products for sale. Of course, nothing could be worse than a MINI full of detailing products be destroyed in 100+ degree heat, so it would be nice to also get an idea of which products anyone would be interested in me bringing over.

For those of us not lucky enough to be able to attend/take advantage of your expertise and experience, please enlighten us on how to do this! My mini gets so dirty sometimes in the below freezing temps and I do not always want to go to the coin operated touchless places.

well, i'm about 95% sure that I'm going to be there and I hope to make one of these.

OG - do you think you might do one "overall" clinic that touches on a little bit of all of this? I guess that might be hard in an hour, but I bet a lot of people would like that.

Personally, I am probably most interested in learning about the PC since I know absolutely nothing about it. So if I were to sign up for a PC clinic, I'd want it to be pretty basic -- here's how you determine the pads, here's the kind of pressure you use, here's how to decide which polish, etc... However, if these are covered pretty well in your DVD, perhaps I should (finally) order that and do a little studying before I get to Vegas and then can take a clinic on, say, engine detailing, which I'd also like to understand.

I do have one swirly scratch on my rooftop. I noticed it the second day I had my MINI. I'm convinced it was done by the dealer, who had a cover on the car in the showroom and took it off when I wasn't expecting it and *I think* got the elastic part caught on the rooftop. Anyway, I unfortunately didn't notice it till the next day and figured there was no way I could take it back since I hadn't noticed it at the dealer. I was going to try some Scratch-X on it, but never have. Perhaps you can take a look at it and tell me what you think/work your magic on it? It has been bugging me since I got the car.

P.S. - looking forward to finally meeting you Richard!

Richard, is there somewhere you'd like us to sign up for this? Also, if you need a volunteer for the leather cleaning section, you are welcome to use my baby......WHITE leather seats!!! (actually, I do a pretty good job of keeping them clean, but they would make a great canvas for you)

I personally am very interested in the taping/PC and engine cleaning bits.

I will post a sign up link soon--as soon as I write the code. Won't take me long actually. Right now, I'm trying to get a feel for how many people would be interested. From past AMVIV's the problem with the Boot and Bonnet show was that if you wanted to participate in the AMVIV events, that meant you were gone from your vendor area--since it runs all day. So this year I plan to work and not play--well maybe I'll do one teeny weeny drive---the idea of the short classes was to offer flexibility so you could participate in the events or ltake a class etc.. Inevitably there will be timing conflicts and choices will have to be made, but I guess I'm trying to be as flexible as possible.

Because my partner will be there with me, it's conceivable that we could still offer some polishing services during the times that no one wants a class--figuring two polishers going should be twice as fast as one.

As far as doing a general class--I'm completely open to it. I'm not a huge interior detailer guy---I mean, I do it, but it's not all that fun to me, and I wouldn't say I'm the best at it either, but there are certain products that I like to use that work well for me, and I would like to share them.

Richard

There's no way AMVIV will see 100 degree days. Not while it's in March. 70s and 80, entirely likely however.

I'm not planning on doing the runs, not as of now anyway. My main reason for going is seeing one of my best friends who lives there and for an MC2 thing. If you're going to be detailing, I'd like to reserve one of the first spots as MC2 will be taking pictures of my car.

GBMiniGirl... I can't wait to see your car... hope I can find you when you are there! Happy motoring.

I've been waiting for this! My vote(s) are fortaping/PCing the MINI, proper PC use, engine detailing and photodocumenting... but I'd take just about anything that would fit into our schedule - it's starting to look like I won't have time for any runs

I would be interested in about any of it that you might offer. I've got a few of the basics down, but could use some additional pointers in doing some of the detailing processes.

Please keep us informed as to where to sign up.

So far, the '07 tranny is holding up. As long as it keeps chugging along, I shouldn't be too hard to miss. Look for the MY MARY plates with the Florida Gators holder, but it's pretty hard to miss my seats....even from the outside.

Oh, man I wish I were going to AMVIV. If anything, just to go to one of your clinics. Well, if I could pull myself away from the craps table long enough...HAHA

Wanna, why don't you just drive out there. I can go with you if you need some company on the short trip there.

Octane, will you be attending MOTD? If so. Can you provide a clinic there as well?

I will be attending MOTD, however, I'm not sure if I will be doing clinics. Last year it rained quite a bit, and made any kind of outdoor class next to impossible.

At this point in time, I don't think I will be doing them, however, my mind could be changed if there were enough requests for me to do so.
