MINIclo's Wanda Gets Extreme Make Over...
I
Anyways, I attempted to document it myself, but after 4 hours of bonnet stripe removal it was too dark and took too much time to try to video myself as I worked.
In the end, this wasn't the right car for a general purpose restoration video. The only tools that could have restored this were professional level, and that wouldn't have been useful to most NAMers.

Yo richard,
I am in WestLA too, and have access to HD vid cams, plenty of lights, and sound packages. Lemme know if you wanna knock out one of these restoration vids, I would be happy to lend a hand. I could more than likely get some other people I know, who shoot for like E! TV and stuff, to help and shoot 2nd or 3rd cameras.
Thanks that's cool to know. I put a last minute word on the video lists I belong to the day before the detail, but couldn't find anyone local. Glad I have a good source now!
It's really not necessary to have more than 1 camera when the focus is just me and the car, but I appreciate it.
My partner and I just found a shop near Chip Foose's shop. Hopefully we'll be all set up by Feb. 1--for doing classes, selling products, and of course working on cool cars.
When it happens, I'll make sure SCG becomes a NAM vendor, so we can do SCG specific promotions and such. Expect more on this soon!

<quietly packs things and moves to LA>
Haha yep. We're going to be the Ultimate shop in SoCal. Wetsanding & Paint polishing,Training classes for clubs and individuals, inventory so locals can easily get products that we use like M80 and Epic, DVD's for those that can't make it to SoCal, daily web cam, exclusive MINI stuff, etc...I can't reveal too much right now, but that's where we are heading....

Definitely! I just came back from a vacation in SD in La Jolla--very nice and relaxing--went to Sea World with my son--actually and my 2 brothers and their sons too. Didn't make it to Lego Land this time, but I hear it's fun for the kids!
We got a 3 year lease, but hopefully we'll still be in business next summer or fall. JK.

I have too many priorities right now. The internet shop should have been opened weeks ago for pre orders for our newest dvd....should be happening this month around the time of our move.
But as for the bonnets, I have to relay from personal experience that using a bonnet is the safest way to remove dried wax. Although I like removing wax by hand, something many people won't ever realize unless they own such a car, there are paints that are scratch sensitive. These are so soft that simply wiping them with a mf towel scratches them. I worked on a black 2007 Z06 Corvette last week and it had such a paint. But using a bonnet on the PC allowed me to remove the wax without instilling any swirls or what is known as micromarring.
Does that mean the bonnets are good only for scratch sensitive paint? Yes and no. If a soft paint can get scratched by removing wax with hand, then its possible that a harder paint can still be marred by hand, you just don't see it as immediately.
I like bonnets, but unless you have Jet Black paint on the MINI it may not be essential.

As I posted in another related thread, there was no fade which was surprising. It seems that fade is more of a problem with metallics than non metallics.

I just want to say that I went through the process of removing chrome-backed (black printed on top of the chrome) stripes today and it was a complete PITA and I thought of this thread. I was nearly homicidal by the time I was done, but I figured out a process that made things easier.
You will need:
1) Somewhere to park in the sun, or a heat gun (I did the former since I don't have a heat gun).
2) Goo-Gone spray (I used almost half a bottle).
3) A plastic razor blade (the ones I have are called Scrape-Rite).
What was happening was that as I peeled up the stripe, the adhesive layer with the metallic stuck to it was left behind, and the top part of the stripe was pulling up in bits and pieces.
I moved so that the sun was beating down on the stripes, came back 15 minutes later, and they peeled up better, leaving much less of the adhesive/metallic mess behind. Then I used the Goo-Gone spray to loosen up the adhesive, and the plastic razor blades scraped the mess right up.
Unfortunately, I didn't figure this out until the last boot stripe, but whatever...at least someone else will have the benefit of my stupidity

Octane Guy,
have you ever heard of this product, GROG? Is it too good to be true, meaning it won't really work as advertised, (or worse; it'll damage your paint, heaven forbid).

Never seen it but it looks good! My problem with the stripe on this MINI was that it was completely deteriorated so scraping was not an option. I would be concerned about what this does to the finish however, though it says it shouldn't, lol.
Most vinyl comes off easily with a Lil'Chizler.
