Detailing for the complete beginner?

Hi, folks,

I've read with great interest all of the detailing procedures on this forum, and feel like I've learned a ton. That said, I know I'll never make the time to do the full zillion-step shebang like some of the procedures recommend.

Can anyone help me understand what steps are crucial to keeping my new MINI looking good, and which steps are "optional" if I want that "something extra"?

I know myself--if I feel like I have to do 1 zillion steps, I'll bail on all care whatsoever. I'm looking for the starter process that's a bit more manageable. Then, if/as I get hooked, I can add in other steps.

I've never had a new car before, and (I dare to admit it) I've never washed a car on my own before, either, so I'm a total beginner. After reading all the posts here, I definitely want to go the Zaino route.

Here's what I'm thinking; please show me the error of my ways:

Exterior:

1) Wash - Zaino Z7 or Dawn?
2) Zaino Clay bar once or twice a year
3) Wax with Zaino Z2
4) Aquapel for windshields

Interior:

1) ArmorAll Wipes or 303 Aerospace Protectant. Can I also use this on leatherette seats?

Also, how soon after I get my car should I wash and wax?

Thanks in advance for any and all remedial lessons!

My recommendations for exterior:

1) Wash - car with Dawn
2) Zaino Clay bar car (don't forget to claybar your windows too!)
3)Wash - car with Zaino Z7
4) Wax with Zaino Z2 (windows too!). You can do as many layers as you want.

After you have taken 4 hours out of your Saturday to do the above procedure, you are pretty much set for the next 6 months. Just remember to wash your car every now and again with the Z7 wash when you get a chance...

There do not need to be a ton of steps. I was once told "There are no short cuts in detailing, just faster ways to do things."

First, check out the wash video mentioned here.. https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...ad.php?t=74596
This is a good vedio on washing the car. Remember when looking at the video, the products mentioned are a good idea, but you dont have to use them. I personally use stuff from Griots Garage.

As for waxing, you are on the right track. Get a good clay bar system and start with that. Being its a new car, with fresh paint, some will say you dont need to polish. However, after helping a friend polish his last saturdayhttps://www.northamericanmotoring.com/forums/showthread.php?t=75603 I think polishing the car is a must! It will really make your paint pop.

Once you get into it, you will have more fun that you think...at least I do. Your 4 steps will soon become more.

Good luck.
