Mirror Caps Yellowing?

I have the checkered mirror caps. They are 17 months old. When washing last week I noticed to white checks on the top of the cap have yellowed significantly Is anyone else having this problem? I doubt there is a way to get them back white but I wonder if they are warrantied against yellowing?

You might want to ask this same question over in the detailing forum.

If the checkerboard pattern is molded into the mirror, I'd recommend a bit of Scratch-x... start on the underside, where it is less visible, to be safe.

I was just told by a dealer that the mirror caps have a 2 year warranty so hopefully I will get them replaced for free

(unless they try to say that my aftermarket roof decal is non OEM & somehow reflected the sun on my mirror caps & thus voided my warranty )

I'd bet that they blame the yellowing on an engine mod... the excessive speed caused the yellowing!

thanks bamatt - I visited my dealership yesterday and got my checkered mirror caps replaced. They were only "2 summers old" and had yellowed significantly. It took a bit of persuasion but I got them replaced for free

I went to the dealer yesterday & they replaced my checkered mirror caps for free due to yellowing. They didn't put up a fuss or anything .

Now I am wondering if there is any UV protection that I can safely apply to them to prevent this pair from yellowing

A few coats of a high-quality automotive clearcoat couldn't hurt. The only problem could be that if it didn't help, and you took your caps back to be replaced in another two years, they might not replace them if they notice the extra clearcoat on them. (Not likely, but possible).

I was looking for something more along the lines of a spray-on product like 303 Aerospace protectant or something I could spray on myself. I just don't know if the 303 is safe for hard plastics.

Also I doubt they will replace them again in 2 years. I figure I will be replacing them in 2 years at my own expense & then those 2 will get replaced under warranty in 2 more years & on & on & on

On a similar note, my little roof rack hole cover things are very yellow... anyone know if you can buy a new set?
