Peanut butter works!

Well I tried peanut butter on the black trim today.Seems to work great.Kind of hard to get on,but once you start to work it the plastic goes a nice silky black, not greasy looking.Peanut oil Was much easier to get on and also seems to work the same.

If you look close you can see where I stopped at the part that lifts with the bonnet.

Is there something out there that is good to use to clean the plastic first, besides soap and water?

I'd seen the posts about peanut butter, then peanut oil....to remove my dreaded white residue, I didn't have any peanut oil on hand, so I used extra virgin olive oil....I wiped it off thoroughly afterwards...worked great, kept the black black and shiny and didn't attract dirt

I used to use peanut butter but it caused small dimples and holes in my fender trim.

Ok, actually the marks were caused by animals chewing on my shiny black (and tasty) trim. (just kidding!)

I can't bring myself to put peanut butter on a car!

I used to use isopropyl alcohol but now I've found something much better -- Honda makes a spray cleaner which you can find at any motorcycle shop. It's around $6 per can.

Works great -- just use a microfiber cloth to help grab and actually remove the wax residue.

I did it for the first time a few weeks ago to get the Meguiars wax off that I sloppily rubbed on to the trim. If someone had told me 6 months ago that I would be "peanut-buttering" my car, I would have taken odds and made the bet. But, it does work.

I'm finding peanut oil way easier to work with. But have not done the whole car yet, want to see how the oil holds up,and if dust sticks to it more.
And it is going to start raining here any minute,so will see how it does in mucky weather.

Um... guys...

I believe that the peanut oil / peanut butter is supposed to be used to clean wax residue out of the pores of textured black plastic... not as a regular cleaner / protectant.... just as a way to correct a not-so-careful wax application. You get the wax out and then put the peanut products away...

Once you get the wax off, you should wash as usual with a quality auto shampoo and then dress the plastic/rubber with a quality rubber dressing with UV protectants, etc. For the longest lasting shine on the exterior, I use Meguiars #40. 303 Aerospace Protectant is also supposed to be good, but wears off after a week (or a few good rains). I used the Zaino Rubber/Plastic dressing on the exterior for a long time and loved the results, but it too wore off quickly... I still use it on the interior. Vinelex is also supposed to be good, but I've heard simimlar durability questions.

Peanut Butter Works!

I had some spots on my black trim with the dreaded white wax residue.
I Applied peanut butter with my finger, then used a toothbrush to work it in. Left it on for about 5 minutes, then washed the car. The white residue is gone! This works great!

Use creamy. All I had was crunchy and it was more messy than it should have been!

Just use S100 German wax, if it gets on the black trim just wipe it off. Leaves no white residue and actually brings the black back to life. S100 products can be found at HD dealerships. The best wax money can buy...

i might just try Griot's PaintSealant on the arches next time to see how
well it works.

i did a matte-black plastic trim and painted matte-black metal trim
on my dd today since it looked like it may have started fading a little.
turned out to a nice semi-gloss finish. and there is absolutely
no smears. i didn't do anything special either. just applied in a
circular motion.

Griot's advertises durability for one year, so it should last at least
several months without further app.

No one ever mentions Mr. Clean Magic Erasers in threads on removing white from black plastic trim. They are a lot easier to use and do a great job.
