Clear Bra-type Tape?
Clear Bra-type Tape?
At vintage races, I've often seen cars with a crude version of a clear bra that seems to be in strips, rather than a large sheet of film or custom-cut application. It looks like wide, clear packing tape (but I assume it isn't!). It's not the prettiest thing in the world, but it gets the job done for them.
Anyway, my dad is taking his s2000 on a road trip, and wants to tape up the front end. I told him to just drive the darn thing, but I also told him I'd see if I could find more info on the tape. I did a Google search, but didn't find anything very easily - mostly just bulk 3M film, which would be difficult to apply.
I know it's not a MINI, but anybody know anything that might help?!
Thanks in advance.

I did not know such a product existed, but I Googled it and came up with this:
http://www.victorylanemanagement.com...hDuctTape.html
There is a link on there to the actual product. Hope this helps.

Not sure how duct tape is on the finish. I know they use it to repair race cars, but you never see what happens when they take it off!
I searched through the 3M site and found this: "3M™ Co-Extruded Polyethylene Protective Tape 25A25. Helps provide temporary protection of painted metals, glass and plastics from surface damage, such as scratching, abrading, etc." ( http://tinyurl.com/57q9k )
Hopefully someone here has actually used something, so I don't end up recommending something that turns out to be worse for the car than chipped paint!
Found this stuff, which claims it is removable "without a sticky residue".

You can use painters tape (the non-tacky blue stuff) - I've known plenty of people to use it on the track and for other gravelly excursions. Looks funny (and will peel up over distances and with any moisture) but works

The original product was Helicopter tape. It was designed for the rotors of Helicopters to keep them from abrading. I did a websearch once and found a company that sold it in different widths and thicknesses at reasonable prices and they even sent me a sample but I've lost their info.
Leading Edge tape
I just got the new Pegasus Auto Racing Supplies catalogue. (www.PegasusAutoRacing.com) They carry "Leading Edge tape" which is the same as the product I saw. Their price for clear is much more than the company I dealt with but a Google for Leading Edge Tape may turn up something different from a Helicopter tape search.

Email Joe at this address: imp.auto@verizon.net and ask him about his "track wrap".
The tape is 3M part # 84804. It's their Scotchcal Paint Protection film. It's 4" wide and 8 mils thick. I don't have the roll with me since I'm on the road, but I believe it's 40 yards long.
It's not cheap, but it is less than a repaint to the front end.
I've used it on various cars over the years, at up to 168 mph, and it's never come off, nor have I had a rock chip in an area that was covered.
Blue painter's tape offers very little in the way of protection, and won't stick to a freshly waxed surface. In my opinion, save yourself the time of using it and get the right stuff.

Thanks everybody!
My dad decided to just leave the S2000 naked for the trip. He leads me on wild goose chases like this pretty frequently - I can't remember how many times I looked up Blue Book prices on used S2Ks for him before he finally bought one!
Sorry you all had to be dragged into this one with me, but at least I'll have more options for him the next time he inevitably asks about this.
