you are PROBABLY ok using a coin operated "wand" place as long as you stay 2 feet back with the wand

If you use Simple Green make sure you dilute it or the run off will have the tint of your paint......ask me how I know.

A fireman's nozzle is a good idea as it gives you very good control regarding spray pattern and amount of water flow.

The procedure I use is to we lightly, coat with a cleaner, use a few soft brushes to loosen stubborn dirt, rinse gently, repeat as necessary.

I am not sure about the 2nd generation cars but the Body Control Module on the 1st generation models is sensitive to moisture. So excessive amounts of water, especially to the back side of the engine can produce excessive moisture which can provide some fun effects with electronics in the vehicle until things dry out. Again, ask me how I know.

It would be great if we can find a write from a member here for DYI. What to do, not to do and what to cover up properly.

I used simple green, diluted of course, on a dust rag to wipe down as far as possible then got underneath and wiped up as far as possible then used a long skinny brush to clean possible. Keeps from getting the wrong things wet. To get the bugs off the radiator behind the lower grill I use a refrigerator coil brush. Any appliance repairman can get you one for around $10.00. Once I got the engine bay good and clean the first time it is now much easier to maintain. Just the water blown under the bonnet from normal regular washing is sufficient to wipe down the engine bay and keep it looking impressive. Be careful of the paint under the bonnet, it is not clear coated and some solvents can have their way with it. You'll love the reaction of people when you show off ALL of your MINI.

If willing to invest a few dollars, what I use is a low cost steam cleaner

cuts grease and oil like a hot knife thru butter and doesn't toss as much water around
