Brake dust
Brake dust
I'm having a horrible brake dust problem with JR, my 2012 Pepper White MCS. Any recommendations on best way to remove? Suggestions for future paint protection? Do mud flaps help? Partial to Griot's products, if that helps. Thanks in advance for the advice.
I've actually found that waxing and polishing the rims help tremendously in reducing the amount of brake dust build up, and also making it easier to clean what does accumulate because it comes right off.
I 2nd the Griot's Garage Products, 2nd to NONE in my book!!
Griot's Garage here too. Extra wax and clay bar more often. As soon as those pads start to look worn out get ceramics ASAP. I'm leaning towards EBC red stuff or Carbotec Bobcats. Haven't decided yet but OEM pads are soon outta here.

I noticed that when we took delivery of our new S the dealers detail dept. must have used a can of tire black on each tire!
That stuff flew off onto the body paint and was very noticable.Once I got it washed off, the brake dust is only contained to the wheels.

Car wash owner here. Most people put waaaaaaaayyyyyyyy too much tire shine on there cars. That stuff flings off the tires and a lot of it ends up down the side of the car. The dust is attracted to it and gives you the little black spots right behind the tires. Also be sure to wipe off your wheels after you put your tire shine on. You "DO NOT" want any on your wheels. The brake dust, silicone and the heat will bake right into the wheels. If you keep them clean they are fairly easy to wash off. I am not a fan of The Armour All wheel protectant. Doesn't last that long for the cost.
If appearance is a priority over performance (it is for me), change your brake pads, pure and simple. I'm using Mintex Red Box, and the dusting is almost nothing compared to OE pads. I've also used TRW (oem for Mexican VWs) and Akebono ceramic with similar results on other cars.
Foaming tire cleaner - used correctly - on dry tires - and let it dry - it works wonders.
Wheel cleaners - tried them - caustic smelling and don't work.
Wax on wheels and body - Tech Wax 2.0 has incredible water beading that lasts and lasts.
Brake dust - heard good things about HAWK - but prefer OEM for the quietness - I just wash the car when the wheels look dirty.

Had EBC GreenStuff, Loved 'em. Mintex Redbox, Love 'em. (still in my back tires) Hawk HPS, I wish i could return them. they seem to create a ridiculuos amount of dust about the same as OEM. I'll probably go back to green stuff. almost no dust short stopping distance. pretty quiet. as for keeping the dust off the car. i agree with keeping the tire shine to a minimum, personally not a fan of the glazed donut look. i like a matte finish and i use prima nero lightly applied. tiny amount of "shine".
