Anyone Rust-Proof their Mini?
Anyone Rust-Proof their Mini?
HI,
I know that Mini's come with a rust/corrosion warranty, ( & they do stuff to it when it's being built), but does anyone still use some type of rust protection on their car?
Will it do any harm to do it?
I'd rather be safe than sorry & not have to deal with any corrosion if it happens years from now.
Thanks

I used Rust Bullet on the driver's door sill under the seal. Rust was already present. I've yet to do the passenger side. There is also some rust under the trunk handle that I'll need to address soon.
Problem with aftermarket rust proofing is it tends to block the drainage holes and potentially cause a worse condition.
Also they require that you get it 'maintained' every year to get their warranty. At least that is what I was told. Just keep it stock, wash when the temps are near freezing, keep the car outside and dry/frozen if subfreezing temps.

Rustproofing a MINI has a totally different meaning than you think. You need to show at least one area of rust on your MINI to 'proof' that it is not an imposter. All MINI's have rust on them. It's built into their design, so don't try and defeat the engineers. Just check out underneath your gasket along the door sill, or virtually anyplace on a Classic Mini.

The factory body/undercoating is pretty good on the body and frame. I have seen it many times and it does'nt look that good. Plus it makes repairs difficult because you have to remove undercoating every time you want to take a bolt or nut off. Washing the underside of your car is much more important than undercoating.
2 friends of mine each own seperate (very reputable) body shops in my area. When we bought our 4Runner, they both said the aftermarket rust-proofing, Scotch-guarding, and undercoating was a waste of money. I took their advice but the office mgr who did the paper work on our Toyota was so PO'd that we left the dealership with a bad taste in our mouths. Too bad when you're buying a brand new vehicle. Not owning a body shop I can't speak from personal experience about any of the after-market 'protection' stuff.
