Cleaning Under the Hood???
Cleaning Under the Hood???
I'm looking to get all the dirt, grit, pollen and what not out from under the bonnet. I heard a powerwasher on the softest setting can do the trick. I just have to cover my super AGS filter. I think anything more then powerwashing is going to take way too much time and energy. Is this a safe way to clean?
Probably yes, just watch where you point it. Those things pack a punch and can rele do some damage to sensors and stuff. I usually use engine shine and just wipe off the underside of the bonnet with the reg when im done
I use a steam cleaner
less psi then a pres' washer so you don't have as much worry about the spray while the heat means you cut crud without the need for extra chemicals.
If you do use any cleaning solutions be careful of the body color paint. What you have in the engine comparment is base coat without the protective clear for the most part. I've seen strong concentrations of Simple Green take the color off leaving just primer . . .
Pollen and sand/grit can be substantially cleaned up with compressed air and a soft brush. Then steam to get the grime. I hit the 79 twice a year this way.

This is how to clean your hood and it will work every time.
1. Start it up let it run for about 3-5 minutes.
2. Turn off engine and open the bonnet. While the bonnet is open spray engine with simple green.
3. Close bonnet and let simple green sit on the warm engine for about 3-5 minutes.
4. Open bonnet and take your garden hose and spray off the simple green and engine.
5. Repeat the spraying of simple green and garden hose till your engine bay is as clean as you want it (which will only be 1 or 2 times)
I read this in a Lincoln Mark VII news letter that one of my buddies gets and gave it a try and it works amazingly. Other then putting on trim dressing it was show car clean. Oh ya you can cover your intake if you want but, you do not have too. Just remember that if you don't do not drive your MINI until it is dry which I would suggest driving it until the engine bay was dry also.

Another method by agranger from the Detailing forum (actually similar to what Porthos posted). Good stuff:
