Scratched Windshield!

Holy cow! We have been having some really bad weather and the city puts this stupid gravel down on the roads here. Apparently some of the grit has put some scratches (around 7 pretty obvious ones) on my baby's windshield. I'm not sure if it was from the wipers or from me cleaning it during the storms. I'm wondering if anyone knows of any way to get these buffed out. I have an appointment with "Glass Doctor" in town on Monday. The lady on the phone said they could get them out, but I'm worried they might cause distortion. Has anyone done this? I'd really hate to have to get a new windshield after only having the car for 5 months. Any ideas out there?

i had some rather large scrapes buffed out of the back window of my mustang when some flashing off a building fell on it... turned out great.

i heard that they will not touch the front window unless its maybe all the way on the top edge.. dont want the liability of distorting the view... i never could tell if it was distorted on the mustang as it was the back, down low and tinted....

Thanks for the info. Where did you have your work done? A couple of the scratches are way off on the edges of the windshield, but I do have a weird swirly one right in the center! Ugh. I guess I can see what they can do on Monday and if it turns out badly I can get a new windshield. Hate the thought of that though. I wonder if I'd go through the Mini dealer if I do that? This is just so annoying. Thanks again for the help.

A Possible Solution

Hello,

There are glass repair companies around here that advertise services for removing pits, nicks, and scratches. The results are very good, you cannot see where the blemishes were. This may be something for you to check out.

Glass Repair Kit I found this at Griot's and it may be what you are looking for.

The kit you reference is for filling in bullseye impacts and cracks in glass, not scratches or chips. You can find the same kit at your local auto parts store for less then $15. Last time I bought one, it was well under $10. They work by forcing a resin into the cracks, but it won't fill holes or craters.

i actually dont remember the company... the building owner found the place and kind of sent me there... It didnt look like a national company though. Start with the dealer... I bet they have some places

Every dealer I know about..

subs out glass work and marks it up. So if it's not warranty, I'd steer clear from the dealers. (when I had one done at a dealer (on someone else was paying) there was the Mini invoice for $600, but they left the invoice from the service that came out.... just over $200!)

If you do decide on a windshield swap, wait till winter is over!

Thanks!

Thanks all for the great comments. I'm going to see what the glass company tomorrow says. Hopefully I'll get the results I'm looking for...if not, probably try one more glass place and if that doesn't work...new windshield come Spring. I'm hoping it won't come to that. I'll post what happens as soon as I get it done. Thanks again!

No can do...

Well, I took it in to the Glass Doctor and the guy was at least honest with me. He said that if they tried to repair the scratches, I'd end up with swirls much worse than the fine scratches that are in there. I got a quote on a new windshield. I'm going to wait a bit and see if these scratches drive me crazy when I drive at night. If not, then I might wait to get the windshield after a chip or star. Or I might just get a new windshield come Spring. He quoted me $375 for a new windshield with rain sensor which I thought was pretty good.

Hurray!

I found out that my windshield can be replaced via the additional glass coverage I initially bought when I purchased the vehicle in August. I'll be out nothing and I'll finally not have to try to see through those hideous windshield scratches!!! I'm really glad I got the glass coverage now!
