Yea I know what you mean about still being able to see the edges of the chip. Overall though, I am very happy with the reuslts. I wasnt expecting an absolutely perfect result. Next time however, I will try the Langka. And let me know when you up for having visitors!!! I will gladly go out to AL!!! haha

My pens work great. Have them in a total of 5 colors for all of my cars. I use them in addition to the Langka.

I have gotten paint for my BMW from paintscratch.com.. They have anything from tiny bottles to gallons of made to order paint and matches the OEM color... I have had ordered from them for my Alpinewhite E30 and I have ordered from them id say 4-5 times in the past so good luck with them... I will be ordering from them for some touch up paint for the MINI here soon...

I've heard that the pens occasionally get clogged and it can be difficult getting the paint to flow smoothly without creating a blob; true? If they're just like those computer disk writing pens that write in silver and gold, mine do not flow well sometimes.

I only need a tiny amount right now (and it tends to dry out over time), so is there an advantage to getting it from somewhere other than the dealer (i.e. price, applicator tip/brush, color matching, etc)?

Sounds like regardless of where/what kind of paint you get, you still need Langka or something like it to finish up and get the optimal result. Seems like they all end up around the same cost once you add in shipping/handling, even on the smallest amounts. FWIW, my dealer happens to very close by, but I thought their prices might be a bit high.

I think my touch-up paint kit from the dealer was about $18. Came with a bottle of color and a bottle of clear.

That sounds like a good price. My local dealer quoted around $27 (plus tax) which I think is too much. Looking for OEM color match for $20 or less, if possible. Should have worked it into the deal; forgot.

I was told by a paint shop guy that if you store the pens on their sides it doesn't get all gooped up as fast. And so far he was right. 2 of my pens are over 3 yrs old and they have both worked just fine. The worst thing I have had to do was to dip the end in a bit of paint thinner to get it flowing again.

I think I only paid around $20 for my touchup paint bottle (color & clear) from the dealership but that was a few years ago).

One piece of advice... when you are doing the repair be careful of holding the full bottle in one hand & the touchup brush in the other while doing repairs. It is possible to carelessly bend over while dabbing the brush in a paint chip & spill paint all over your grill. Don't ask me how I know this

a touch-up paint question

ok so i have done a quick pass with a fine cut cleaner and then prima swirl. Starting to llok REAL good but i now notice EVERY little stone chip on the fron. ( and you can imagine that a 5 year old daily driver has a few ) I still have to finish with the swirl, then i also have finish, amigo, epic, slick etc etc to put on. At what stage should i do the chip repair so as not to have the polish/wax etc try to remove the repair??

Generally you want to make sure the paint is good and clean, then touch it up, let it dry the 48 hours or whatever, and then Swirl back over to kinda smooth it down.

Unless they're REALLY bad, and then you get into wetsanding and all that...but that's how I deal with my little-bitty chips - a little paint, a little Swirl, *almost* good as new.

but would explain what a REALLY bad chip is?? All of mine (I have several :( ) are down to the primer, but not rusting or anything. Will I need to wet sand or anything?

Depends on how clean of a touch-up job you do, I suppose. I think most people can get away without having to wet-sand...but for as flawless of one as possible you'd probably want to (disclaimer: as long as you know what you're doing). I did one last year without wet-sanding, but it required a painful amount of precision with the touch-up job, and then a good polish with the PC after.

I've had a few small chips down to the primer, and I try to deal with them asap. Close enough to the beach that we get fog rolling in, and I don't want rust. Just be REALLY careful when you apply the paint. Toothpick, not the brush, and a magnifying glass help. My more recent chip repairs look MUCH better than the first!

i would do the chip repair after you're done detailing the entire car
and just remove the wax in spots by using rubbing alcohol. then
do spot wax later on (2wks).

why?

cause if you touch and detail later, that means you need to wait a
good 2wks for the touchup to dry fully...otherwise with the polish
it might take off the touchup you did, or the wax will not let the
touchup dry.

Try drcolorchip.com. They use a 2 step process that seems easier than Langka. I bought the big set for my mini but havent used it yet. I will in the next week or so and will post the results.....
+1
-I've used this on my Porsche, it works flawlessly. I can't even tell where I touched up the paint that's how well this stuff works. I am ordering some for my Mini as well.

I've just clayed Ms.Newton for the first time. Should I repair paint chips prior to epic or after? I have about 6 very small chips.

I've decided to go with paint from dealer and langka mostly because Dr. Colorchip does not have Lightning blue metallic yet. Neither does paintscratch

Anyone else had any luck with metallic lightning blue color matching?

thanks!

color matching for chip repair on Lightning Blue Paint

Has anyone with Lightning Blue paint purchased paint for touch up repair from dealer, drcolorchip, or paintscratch? Is A63 the correct match for Lightning Blue? I thought the color was Lightning Blue Metallic but both websites list Lightning Blue as 'Pearl'. I'm a little confused

If you have made purchases from above, are you happy with purchase?

Jury is still out for me on langka vs. drcolorchip. Both seem to have equal amount of loyal customers.

Also, all this has caused me to rethink the clear bra issue. Only one rock chip appears to be above the potential clear bra line. I am thinking of ordering this and having it put on. Who do you order this from?

Anyone had experience with putting one on after delivery? My dealership in
Memphis does not put this on. They did recommend a company that puts on graphics, etc for installation. Any thoughts on where to have clear bra installed? I live in Jonesboro Arkansas. I think the next closest Mini dealership is St. Louis. Should I plan on a saturday in Memphis with local graphic company or a weekend in St. Louis (if they do apply clear bras) at mini dealership?

Cori
