The Touch Up Paint Thread
Dr Colorchip has gotten rave reviews, though I've never tried it myself.. I always clear bra my cars when new. Basically a necessity here in the desert, where sand/rock damage is rampant (and busted windshields are way too common).

touch up paint?
my 2006 mcs has a lot of marks on the front hood due to small pebbles hitting it on the highway. is it just me or is it prevalent to many owners since car is low? anyways, anyone know good touch up paint to use? i have astro black. i would appreciate ur feedback.
I bought the "Autovisuals" BRG felt-tip paint pen (#A67) from AtlanticBritish ... about $18, does a very nice job touching up the small chips in the hood, and comes with a spare pen-point. They also sell the clearcoat pen for the same price.
Do people really recommend this "pen" (http://www.minicarparts.net/Parts/PP851.cfm) -- it isn't actual car paint, it seems?
I usually prefer buying touch up paint from paintscratch.com ...
Reading the rave reviews here I have just ordered the repair kit from http://www.langka.com
Looking forward to trying out the "Blob eliminator" on my recent amateurish scratch repair to my bonnet
. It's only been a couple of days so I should be able to 'smooth' out the blobs...... right?

From their FAQ
Q. Will The BlobEliminator work on the touch up paint I put on my car some time ago? A. It depends on how long the "old" touch up paint has been on the vehicle. The BlobEliminator is only "guaranteed" to work on newly applied touch up paint as in our directions. However, it will most likely work on old touch up paint, just no guarantees. You'll just need to be sure the area is very clean since you will need to rub longer and use plenty of The BlobEliminator if you are going to attempt removing this old touch up paint. We recommend you use The BlobEliminator for repairing some new chips, to get a feel for what it does. Once you have done that, then try it on the "old" touch up paint areas... just takes some elbow grease and a bit more rubbing time.
but if you are talking about a scratch you should really go the their web page and read everything and watch the video. Pay attention to: The SQUEEGIE Method
scratches are harder to do as it is easier to pull all the paint out. But no harm, you just start over....

I just got myself a little chip, all the way at the front edge of the hood.

I don't care for the pens myself. I get better results using a very very fine good quality brush. Go to an art supply or a place like Michael's crafts and get a 000. Put a little bottle paint on a business card and work with the brush and a little thinner - the bottle paint tends to be pretty thick.
I've blobbed on my touchup paint and it's going to get Langkaed tomorrow. Wow, that was a lot of rock chips. I'm afeared I might not find them all when I go back to even it out.
Has anyone ever missed a blob and then noticed it weeks later? Will Langka still do the trick or are you basically sce-rewed at that point?

Been reading more on this and from I have gathered, the blob eliminator solution is designed to remove touch up paint only not effecting the OEM paint surfaces.
It also it would seem that the longer you leave the touch up paint to dry the better results you will have with bringing the paint blob down to the cars natural finish. If you have used TU Paint before, you know that as it drys it shrinks down leaving a painted cavern....seems building up that chip is necessary.
May require additonal blob solution applications with a soft cloth but workable with respect to your concerns.

dry time is about a week to 2 weeks depending on how much you applied. then you can take a 2000+ sanding block and gently sand down the convex to match the surrounding paint. then take a mild polish like ScratchX and gently polish away to match surrounding paint. then let it cure completely for another 2-3wks with no wax.
wish dr.chip made touchup for wheels...

That is great for one chip, I agree. But what about road rash we have on our Aero front bumpers and such ?
So far it appears that Dr Color Chip is the only semi-permanent solution next to shelling out some 3-400 dollars for a complete repaint
Only to end up back here again in two years....

Finally got to see the results of my Langka handiwork in the sunlight today (by the time I finished up smoothing down the blobs it was past dusk and thanks to work I haven't seen the sun since last Tuesday).
Around every spot I Langkaed a blob down there's a nice hazy halo in the paint.
I don't know if this is scratching or what but I'm going to have to go at it w/ some Swirl to see if I can't get rid of that.
Otherwise the results weren't too bad, though I think the parts counter gave me a bum tube of touchup paint for the roof. It's definitely more of a grey than a white, but it still looks better than the massive chips. I was surprised to see the body color red underneath the roof white. I would have thought they'd spray the two parts separately.
There's a few blobs I missed and a few where I need to go back and add a touch more paint because I got a big too agressive with the removal, but I'm satisfied overall. I can't even imagine how much of a pain it would have been to try to apply the touchup paint and get it to look good w/o the ability to smooth the excess blobs down.

Yup - Langka is an abrasive - it will haze the paint a bit. Need to polish after the paint is fully cured. Swirl will work - or Meg's ScratchX is easy to do with a microfiber cloth by hand and yields good results for this.
