It's a good question! You probably couldn't find a well-defined answer because there are so many variations out there, in practice.

First, you cannot over-use Hydro in the sense that it won't hurt anything by using it every minute of every day. However, that, of course, is WAY overkill, even for the super-obsessed.

Second, it really depends on what you want from Hydro...

From a purely protective standpoint (Hydro as your protective layer/wax), here are some guidelines based on its protective durability:

Hydro on a wet surface (wax-as-you-dry style) should be applied at least once per month.

Hydro on a dry surface should be applied at least every 3 months.

From a gloss-enhancing standpoint, most people use it (sparingly is usually plenty) every time they handwash their car.
It always adds more gloss (and even more so 24 hours after you apply it). Of course, you're adding more protection each time too, but at this frequency the emphasis is usually the visual enhancement your paint.

In summary, use the protective guidelines above as your minimums and from there use it whenever you feel like adding gloss! Just beware... it can be oddly addictive.

I also just received my bottle and was wondering if I should remove any old wax before using? What about applying Epic first?

if it's carnauba make sure to remove it before applying Hydro cause
i found that it doesn't stick well to natural wax.

if it's polymer it doesn't seem to mind. but it will be best if you have
Epic under there for sure!

Kenchan- Are you sure you don't work for us and I just don't know it??

He's right... don't use Hydro over a carnauba wax but it's no problem at all over any synthetic-type waxes.

Crappy. I'd strip it and start over.

that's a good question...I am sure at the dealer when they prep it for delivery they probably use Zip wax or something like that, but at the factory, for the long lonely boat ride to the states, do they apply any protection to the paint, other than the clearcoated paint?

I think the cars get coated with a thick waxy substance for the boat ride over, as evidenced by the fact that new owners frequently find the yellow stuff seeping out of various cracks and crevices for the first few weeks after they take delivery.

Well the cars ship covered in cosmoline, which is a really thick waxy coating. Its stripped off at the VDC by steam cleaner...and then the car gets a "detail" at the dealership. But I don't know if they do anything in between. But the detail from the dealer is usually crap, and I think most here would tell you they stripped it off and redid it within the first week.
