cleaning dust on car?

Just got my car, noticed dust collects fast on the black top. There any good way to do a quick dusting of the car without making any swirl marks?

indoors yes, outdoors no

I have come to understand that only a two bucket wash with premium soap and lambswool mit is the only safe way to clean a car.

Quick detailing is for people who have a perfect car that sits in the garage for a few days.

A duster is good for interior dust, not dust that comes from outdoors. I returned my duster when I realized this. Griot's has a really nice mf duster. it even has a case for it which is important so that you dont collect more dust.

I figured that dusting and quick detailing is for show cars in a garage, not for cars you drive on a daily basis.

You can use quick detail spray of your choice and some really plush quality/premium microfibers if it is indeed just dusty and not actually dirty.

This is how I get by during the week in between washes

^+1 on QD and plush MF (I use Slick and Monster Fluffy) -
I also sometimes use my OXO duster with no probs.

Your paint type / color matters, though - I'm Cool Blue metallic - which hides swirls pretty well - so I'm not freaking out if I introduce a few between annual polishings... in cars that show swirls badly, you may want to be more careful...

I get lint on my car virtually every day from who knows where. My car is outside and my California Duster works great. If you have time, Slick is great. But, if you only have a minute or two before heading off to work, etc., a California duster does the job. Note that you just lightly run the duster over the car, without exerting pressure on it. Some fear a duster will scratch the car. No way. Although you should remove stuff like twigs, seeds before dusting, without exerting pressure, the debris is just knocked off the car, not drilled into the surface.

i use the california duster too.
i only use it after i've washed my car and put on some hydro.
and i usually dust it once in the morning, once in the afternoon, and once at night.
sometimes more. then once it rains. i give up on the dusting. car is too dirty for that.
i can now dust my car in about 30 seconds.

Yeah, I wash my car and Hydro it each weekend, weather permitting, so the Hydro does give it an extra layer of protection. Even so, a duster isn't going to stratch your car unless you use it like a sander.

I used to use a California Duster and/or QD my car to try to keep from having to wash it as often. I've given up. It's a losing battle for a car like mine that lives outside. I just let the car get dusty and wash it every week if I have to.

Yeah - my car is garaged at night and parked in a lot in the open - not under trees - during the day - as long as it doesn't rain, I can go WEEKS between washes and keep the car looking clean with the duster and QD...

The one thing I've heard about using dusters that makes sense to me is not using them on hot surfaces. Seems the parafin in them comes off and leaves a residue if you use them on a car that's been sitting out in the sun.

oh....so that's why i notice smears all over the windows.
and here i was thinking the whole time it was some weird unknown residue that smeared.
oh well. i dont notice it in the paint but i def see it in the windows.
i like to wash the windows with invisible glass here and there when the windows get really dirty. and when im bored at my store with nothing to do.

Yeah - both good points that I forgot to mention:
1) avoid duster + hot paint
2) avoid duster and glass all the time

you can get a cheap Swiffer duster from Walmart - very effective but will not remove water marks etc, OR you might want to consider using ENJO cleaning system cloths that are made from micro fibers and are very effective at dry or wet cleaning without scratching the paint. Black is notorious for showing every minute detail of scratches and swirls.
Enjo is European technology - look on the internet at ENJOCleantheworld.com for automotive cleaning products

after each drive, i.... (this is for rear only)

1. open the gate and use my boar's hair brush to dust the seals and creves.
2. use my canned air to blow the dust away from the opening.
3. cal-dust the top of the rear bumper.
4. close the gate and cal-dust the entire rear (well i do the entire car).
5. QD the entire area and clarity the glass. (again, i do the entire car).

then a few hours later, i QD the wheels and apply any dressing as necessary.

ok, so you saw my OCD side.

Both cars live in the garage and the California duster works well for quick dusting.....anything else warrants a full wash.

yep, that would be my Hydro side. that's the lazyass side but
maintains better results than what most people can achieve from
their 'normal' 5hr detailing session.

my normal detailing session takes over 12hrs.
