What to use to remove wax?

The way I see it is this. The reason you clay is to remove bonded above surface contaminants. That is, things that are stuck to your paint that won't easily wash off. This would include everything above the paint such as sap, overspray, industrial fall out, and wax. Is clay an effective tool to remove wax? Not necessarily, and it's not what I'm implying either.
But if you are going to clay the paint to remove everything above the surface of the paint, so you have a nice smooth glassy surface perfectly receptive for applying a wax, and then you go a step further to deep clean the paint by spending time polishing out the swirls, I can't see any reason to use a paint prep to remove something that would be been obliterated long ago from the steps you've done previously.
As for wax that's covering surface contamination..which do you think sticks better to paint--wax on a fully prepped surface that allows full contact and bonding of molecules or wax on a dirty surface (i.e. covering surface contamination as you say)? The durability of wax is going to be dependent in part on how well you prep your paint for wax. Wax over a dirty surface and the wax isn't going to last as long. Thus I don't think there is much concern about clay over bonded contaminants.
Thats my 2 cents.

Richard - in an ideal world would you not want to get your old wax out of the way before doing clay? It would seem that you would have better contact between the paint and the clay if it were wax-free before the job. I know clay can be used to remove some of the wax, but what about the wax that remains? What if the remaining wax is covering some surface contamination that you had hoped to get with the clay?
I stripped all the old carnuba off my S with good old plain blue Dawn the other day and it worked wonders, cleans right to the clear coat. Then I applied three coats of Klasse all in one and WOW what a shine!
