Nail in Tire!

Oh no! I was inspecting my summer tires, planning to switch to them soon. I found a nail in one, right in the middle of the tread . Any suggestions on repair or replacement and where I can get this done?

Go to tire rack and find an authorized installer. They can fix it for you. Also, only accept the fix that puts a plug and patch inside the tire, it will last longer and is MUCH better.

Happy Anniversary

Ugh - sorry to hear that Alan - I've been battling the Revenge of the Nails lately - two in the last week. Poor little 16" run flats have no idea what hit them.

trust me .. when i've got no air in these second gen run-flats - i'm just going to get it plugged at the nearest tire shop - I don't have a ton of time to run hither/nither to get a tire plugged from an authorized dealer

I've used Merchants tire alot for non RF.

Craven Tire was great to me for the RFs.

The Goodyear in Mclean fixed my run flat for free (screw in tread), under warranty the first week I had my car.

I had mine fixed at the dealer, $35.
Other place might be cheaper, but check if they can accomodate r/f.
Good luck.

I was told by a tire shop on RT198 that you cannot fix run flats.

I know you can because we had a nail in one of ours. Watch where you go though because not all shops can mount/un-mount RFs.

I took the wheel over to the Merchants on 50, they were listed on the Tirerack site. They did an internal patch for $28. Not bad

Thanks for the advice

Much like normal tires it depends on where the puncture is. It has to be well in the tread. Also once a run-flat tire is patched the tire's integrity is compromised and it is no longer a run-flat tire.

I'm not sure I agree with this.... A tire with a properly applied patch/plug should behave no different than the tire before the puncture.

What is different about mounting run-flats vs. non-rf?

The sidewall on a runflat is about 3 times thicker than a standard tire. So they usually have some beefier machines to unmount/mount the tire.

off topic: Sykesville, eh? I'm right down the road in good old Eldersburg (at least for the time being).
