Things I *wont* miss...
Well, obviously I'm going to miss DCMM.
I'll still be around on the forums obviously, but aside from that I'll be 10000 miles and 15 hours (time difference) away.
But there are some things that I won't miss here, as well as things I'm looking forward to in Guam. Here's one:

If you love very hot and very humid weather every single day of the year, you are going to LOVE Guam !!
I loved it for the first few month (eternal summer was pretty cool) but it wore on me and I started to miss the cool, dry days we get around here in the Spring and Autumn.
What's nice... other than when I was in my Air Force uniform, I didn't wear long pants the entire two years I lived there. Going out at 2 am ? No problem, throw on your shorts and a "T" and you're on your way... because it's still 80 degrees and humid.

Yeah, I used to say I want to be the Weatherman on Guam... easiest job in the world !!
Every day, the same forecast:
Partly cloudy skies with high temps in the mid 90s. 30% chance of a passing shower or thunderstorm. Overnight lows will be in the upper 70s.

Hello...I don't know you since I'm new. But, I'm just wondering how you're going to bring your Mini to Guam??

Okay, seriously... The US Dept of Defense ships cars for servicemembers being assigned overseas (unless you're going to a country that prohibits our military from bringing cars per our Status of Forces Agreement, or "SOFA").
It'll go by truck to port (unless Wagnbat wants to drive it to the port), probably Oakland, and go by ship from there. Takes about six weeks, IIRC.
What, you don't feel like driving it across the entire country to a west coast port ?
It's true... the military IS full of our best and brightest !
Question for you: Are they going to put it on a ship in Baltimore and take it through the Panama Canal ? Or are they going to truck it to the west coast and put it on a ship there ? Seems it would take a lot less time that way. The wait for it to arrive will be long enough !

Don't know, havn't asked. I've not done anything with regards to the PCS except prep my house for sale, and look on the internet for houses in Guam.
I've not done my overseas screening, I've not done my obliserve paperwork, not called personal property about the HHG shipment, not contacted trans about the car shipment... Nada.

Having made the reverse trip recently, AND assuming that you like driving, if time allows, then I'd definately drive it to California. After a few months on Guam, you'll be dreaming about finding a long straight road to drive. On the islands you have two choices, clockwise or counter-clockwise.
He'll be longing for a road that has a speed limit higher than 45. As I remember it, that's the highest speed limit on the island (or is there one stretch along route 15 that has a 50 mph limit ? Memory is fading... it's been 6 years since I lived there.
I'm not procrastinating as much as you might think. The military moves people with very short notice ALL time time. Especially in the DC metro area. Calling them 2-3 weeks ahead of time will be plenty. All they do is find out what date you want to move, and then call their contractors until they find someone available.
If I had specific dates to give them, I'd have called already.
AKA, Air Conditioner.

Will, you're going to LOVE Guam! It's a little unusual when you first get there, but even though the island is 8x30 miles you don't get too sick of it. I didn't and I was stationed there from 93-96. I loved it!! Which end of the island are you going to be on, Agana or on the Air Force end by Anderson? I wouldn't surf there unless you want coral road rash. There aren't a whole lot of sections on the island that accomodate surfing as you would see in Hawaii. And you have to hit Jeff's Pirates Cove on your way to the other side of the island where you'll be able to go for a nice drive and break the 50mph speed limit. Oh, and it does get cool at night (might warrant wearing a sweatshirt (but of course, I was driving my wrangler at the time always topless - the wrangler, not me!)
