Taxes and Registration

Ok.. moving to DC in late jan/early feb. My office is in Suitland MD so I'm not sure if I'll be living in MD or VA. Which one would be best to register my vehicle in? Also, since my car is a hundred years old, will get a some special breaks?

Thanks!

its nice to see a classic coming to town. In MD you can get classic plates for it, but you have to tell them you drive a rediculusly low amount of miles a year . Thats just about the only break you'll get

In Virginia you can register you car as an antique (applies for any vehicle more than 25 years old). If you're not driving it "routinely" doing so means you don't have to re-register it each year thus saving you the yearly registration fees! There supposedly are some restrictions on how much you can drive an antique, but one of the categories you can drive it as much as you want for is participation in car club activities or similar events. Gee, put a DCMM sticker in the window and you'd be covered under that category 100% of the time. Seriously, I've never heard of the owner of an antique being bothered about how much they drive the vehicle with the antique plates (and my line of work involves lots of interaction with the reasons for traffic stops for vehicles). Basically, antique plates in Virginia are a great deal

Check out this link from the VA DMV for more info: http://www.dmv.virginia.gov/webdoc/c...es/antique.asp

In general, I believe you have to pay yearly excise tax in Va. None in MD.

MD also has a Historic Tag if over 25 years old. You must stipulate its NOT a daily driver.

I live in Missouri and had a neighbor who tagged his cars out of Montana through a friend every year. Not legal of course, but I believe it cost almost nothing to do it that way, no safety inspections property taxes etc etc. The caveat was that he had to be extra nice to all of his neighbors or run the risk of being reported for tax evasion.

I wish they all had that attitude! Although my MINI is definitely less of a cop magnet than my last car that was red, lowered, and had tinted windows...

That won't work here. Being the bedroom communities for the Federal Government, LEOs patrol the complexs, take note of how long a car has been sitting there without a new plate, and after 30 days ... ticket.

After all, how else are they going to get State revenues with all that new sales tax?
