MOTD06 Thursday Morning Caravan

Thursday morning caravan route:
Web page format:
http://mappage.net/dcmm/dcmm_motd4_thurs_rt.htm

Txt file:
http://mappage.net/dcmm/dcmm_motd4_thurs_rt.txt

Departing Fairfax VA promptly at 5am!

-=- -=-

I've been planning to leave Thursday morning for a while now, as some of you may know... I've decided to start a thread, and I will update all the important information such as times, routes, rallypoints, and other stuff here in this first post.

Groups are starting to organize, and there's a good chance we'll run our caravan into another, hopefully ending up with a huge group of 50+ Minis driving into Fontana @ the same time.

I anticipate meeting just outside the beltway somewhere, probably Waffle-house where we met for the Cooper Vineyards run... But maybe elsewhere... Anyhow, I'll iron out the details, and post the info here.

Feel free to chime in, yell, scream, gripe, make suggestions, or sign on for this caravan here.

Sounds sort of fun so long as we agree where we're stopping for pee breaks etc.... I hate slow always stopping caravans.....count me in as on the fence.

You can PM me your cell phone # if you'd like it put on the route sheet, but you don't need to post it here on the internet, where all the lurking stalkers are.

And it looks like we'll be using 66W to 81S as the fastest route...

There will be designated stop/break/food points along the way, which is even more reason for people to chime in with suggestions or places they don't want to go or whatever... Otherwise, if you drop out of the caravan you'll need to meet us at the next stop.

WagnBat, I know we talked about it before. We haven't made a definite plan yet, but I'll certainly let you know as we get closer. What time in the morning are you planning to head out, and, are you taking the 95S through Richmond route or the 66W to 81S route?

Edit: oops, I just noticed the route in the previous post.... I think my questions are answered then, Like I said, I'll let ya know.

I've done the drive to the dragon via both routes before. I66 to I81 is a *much* better route. A lot less traffic to deal with. And no major construction delays to deal with!

Erm, that's a question for Mr. Bat. I do seem to kinda-sorta remember a Waffle House on I66 towards the end... Maybe it was in/around the Frederick area? *shrug* Don't remember exactly.

Hey Will,
I would like to start this snake and leave with you from Bowie as we had talked about at once. I can meet you at your house or other way round.

I'm in for this ride. Since I am doing this for the first time and haven't a CLUE where I am going. What time are we planning on leaving? I got an appointment in Fontana at 5pm Thursday.

I'd like to join up if possible on I-81 after the I64 junction. I will keep watching for posts over the next few days

I'll figure out a spot, unless someone would like to chime in with a good spot... Preferably some place that will be open that early (3-4am?), have real food, snack food, as well as gas.

This is the fastest route according to google, listed at 12 hours:
http://maps.google.com/maps?daddr=Hw...872166974&om=1

We could probably shave almost an hour if we all meet at the rally point off of 66, because the listed starting point is in the center of DC.

Like I said though, if you have suggestions, chime in. I should be able to solidify the route this week so everyone will have a week to prepare.

Will,

In the last month or so, somewhere in the Dragon forum, one of the Tennessee locals posted information on some alternate routes that would save time, since there is a large construction project that brings traffic to a halt. I don't have the link to the post handy, but I would check in there, I'm sure you'll find it... I'll be doing the same for our caravan before long.

OK, I believe this is the specific info that Edge might have been referring to:

1. Get off of I-40w at Exit398 (Strawberry Plains Pike) and go LEFT.
2. Follow Strawberry Plains Pike to E. John Sevier Hyw. and go LFET.
3. E. John Sevier Hyw. turns into W. John Sevier Hyw.
4. Follow W. John Sevier Hyw. to Maryville Pike (Hyw.33s) and go LEFT.
5. As you cross S. Washington St. in Maryville, Hyw.33 becomes Hyw. 411s.
6. Follow Hyw. 411s until the merge with Hyw.129.

This route will get you around the considerable construction (and delays) going on in Knoxville on I-40w. (the last 2 times I have taken I-40w through Knoxville the front of my MINI has been damaged by rocks and dirt. )

If you are coming in from the South or West, construction is not an issue.

I hope this helps.
The actual thread is titled "Quickest way to Deals Gap". ...

I'll sift throught it and see if I can find that particular post. Also, the exit for Centreville on I-66 has several shopping centers with large parking lots that might make good meeting spots. (depends on how big the caravan gets)

I've been driving too long!! Anyhoo, I still think that there's a WH along I66.

You could also meet just off of I66 in Manassas, where there's a big shopping center withh a Barnes & Noble (or was it Borders?). I remember that there's a bunch of food type places, but I don't know if any would be open that early.

And it looks like that I got off of I81 just in time while driving down! Now I don't feel like that I wasted 100+ miles motoring around in the fog/rain. (I ended up taking I40 (?) west to 28.)

-Paul! (Who's getting a little annoyed with this f/in internet conection going up and down!!!)

My parents used to live in Maryville - and that is the better suggestion - it's about 8 hours from DC to Marysville and another hour or so to where we're dragonning at. Oh yeah - I still am in Ire.
