License, Registration and Insurance Please

Effective July 16, 2005, District of Columbia police officers will begin issuing $300.00 fines for drivers who cannot provide proof of insurance when stopped. An individual pulled over by District police officers must be able to provide license, registration and a current insurance card or a citation will be issued.

Wow $300 Lot of money for a little slip of paper... Wonder what they would do if you're from Virginia where you're not required to have insurance?

Course if you try and register a car in VA without insurance it'll cost you an extra several hundred dollars just to register your car...

BTW, if you're not aware of it most red light cameras in VA are now OFF. However cameras in Falls Church (and possibly other cities like Vienna) are still on and active but are no longer being used for red light violations. The Falls Church cameras are being used to monitor traffic conditions as well as other uses.

Wow... I was driving through (I think it was) New Jersey a few years ago when I got pulled over for speeding *sigh*. The police officer was nice enough to let me off with a warning, but because he had already started the ticket he had to ticket me for something. So he ticketed me for "failure to show my insurance/registration" which was only a $25 fine.

$300?! Wow, my speeding ticket would have been less than that! (Maybe!). I have a special little folder in my glove box that I keep my registration and insurance card in. Very glad I do since I drive through DC often.

Thanks for the heads up!

Yeah I had a similar incident many years ago down in Florida... $25 fine, unless you want down to the courthouse in 14 days and produced an insurance card and then it was only a $5 fine
