Apocalypse!

Lordy...2 inches of snow, and one would think that the end of civilization has occurred. Schools closing, frantic snowplowing, panic buying and people forgetting how to drive! IT'S TWO FREAKIN' INCHES, PEOPLE!!!!
Criminey, I tried to do errands today and it took me 20 mins. to get to the grocery store, which is 5 mins. from my house. Then I stood in line at the store for lord knows how long. Then another 20 minute drive home.
grrrrrrr....It happens every year, and I still get irritated.
Besides, the apocalypse doesn't happen 'til tomorrow

I was driving to work at 1045 through McLean. There was about a inch of snow on the road. Not enough traffic to do anything but press it down. No salt, sand or any thing elsw. I thought I was going slow enough. The light infront of me turned - well yellow. I stepped on the breaks nothing happened well the ABS kicked in but the speed did not change. I was already in a low gear. Seems the street had turned to ice and I was going down hill. Cars to the right of me, SUVs to the left of me. One thin lane streight ahead. ABS kicking and kicking. The light was getting yellower and yellower and yellowwwweeer. I was not slowwing at all. Just as the light goes red I slide into the middle of the intersection. Lucky for me everyone else was on a up hill slop and could not get started. i do not like cutting it that close.

I gassed it and went on through. I was impress the car ran streight and true. The road has some nasty ruts. My MINI is a good snow car. Nothing is good on ice. I'm glad I left a bunch of room around me.

But I am with you Kgdblu, ussunns (I will include myself) around these parts need to do better on snow driving. Even though I thought I was going slow enough - I wasn't at that intersection. I even did some test stops on my street before heading out on the road to get a feel of conditions. The rest of the trip in was with out event. There were some people that must have put a brown spot on the seat though cause even on good pavement they were going so slow. Not to be confused with careful, just so slow and in the wrong lane as well.

Stay safe out there
John

Katie

Don't come into the city. It's been solid gridlock since the first little white flaky fell from the sky. Lots of overconfident fools in their SUV's driving like bats out of Hell complimented by the underconfident who have no experience driving in snow. We have had guest's tell us it has taken an hour to get to us from across town tonight. Add the security situation and road closures .....................

I heard an amusing blurb of conversation on the Metro today about how a guy was renting a ZipCar (another subject entirely) today for the next few days (i.e. inauguration time) and he thought it would be best to upgrade from the Mazda 323 he was getting to an SUV because they're "safer in the snow."

Now ain't that a hoot - hey, I think I'm going to go dump my MCS for something top-heavy with a huge wheelbase.

I love this culture of ours!

Safe driving and steer clear of the knuckleheads---

We got about an inch here in Raleigh and traffic is backed up to the point that a news crew just came on the air and admitted that they were five hours into their 10 minute drive back to the studio and still weren't there yet!

To make matters worse, the children are stuck at school waiting for the school bus to arrive; the latest is that they'll be picked up at 8:30 p.m. Who knows when they'll come home. Picking them up is simply not an option with the ice, accidents and traffic.

On a depressing note, a MINI apparently caused an accident trying to squeeze between two cars which resulted in a pile up.

It took my brother 3 1/2 hours to drive from Sterling, VA to south Alexandria. I despise DC drivers!!! (Present company excluded! )

On my way home, there's a two lane road (one lane in each direction) where for one 200 foot portion, there's a bit of an incline. Well, the dozen cars in front of me decide to tackle this unplowed, unsanded, and unsalted obstacle in front of me by going 2 miles an hour. Well, needless to say, most only half made it. Some started spinning, and others tried to just barrel through. How I wasn't witness to a 12 car pileup is beyond me. (luckily, I had my GPS going, so with a quick look, i spied a route around the mess by cutting though a couple neighborhood roads! )

Anyway, I hope all made it home safe from work today!

-Paul!

Probably has something to do with how you feel after commuting in the snow surrounded by SUV drivers who are also on cell phones.

One thing I never understood and never will is the connection b/t toilet paper and snow.. .. but it must be the same relationship b/t buying an SUV for "family safety" and driving it @ 75-80 m/ph on Rt.50 while it rains and snows..

PS: My little one was doing very well in the snow today, but tonight she is nice and warm in the garage !!!

All hell broke loose this afternoon here in Richmond. I-95 was shutdown in both directions at times . I took an alternate route (I-295) and got home without incident or major traffic in 1 hr 15 min (normally 35-40 min).

I also experienced the "step-on-the-brakes-and-keep-going" thing at a light. I was only going maybe 20 mph and luckily nobody was in front of me.

I know I have the record for today...three hours and ten minutes to go six miles...from Rosslyn to Capitol Hill.

Stella did well. As other posters have noted, with stock tires and DSC on, the car is extremely sticky and stable in snow.

Still, AAAARRRRGGHH!!

here's the capper.....Paul had to stay over in Maclane (or however you spell it) because of the freakin' traffic and the fact they've closed half of the District's streets! He has to be at work early tomorrow, and since it took him 40 mins. just to get out of the driveway there, we decided he shouldn't fight his way home.

Sheeeeeeeesh!

left work yesterday at 2:30, got in my MINI, drove out of the garage and proceeded on my regular way home. Pulled into my driveway 50 minutes later, not bad for a 26 mile commute, normally takes me 40-45 minutes.

Later today will be heading down to one of the Inaugural ***** this evening

How in the world could Paul sleep without Inky and Winston ????

Oh, I"m so sorry for Mr. Paul. 2 inches of snow (less is some parts) shouldn't cause this major "meltdown" My word.... May he be able to come home tonight

Hugs,
PB

If that wasn't enough, they did the right side of the car too, front to back! $#@%%$$**&^^%#$#@$%^&*(()()*^&%^$%#$#@!!!!!!: mad:: mad:: mad:

I have something to say about this, but I'd end up getting banned from the board for bad language if I say it how I want.

So I'll leave it at this... That Sucks.

I don't suppose the motel has security cameras?

Just caught this post today. I had an appoinment and dinner at the Tower Club in Tysons Corner on Wednesday during the dreaded 1inch of snow. Overlooking the Beltway, as far as I could see, parking lot conditions on both the outer and inner loop. Nothing but solid white and red lights from 3:00 until about 7:00. Rediculous.

Later that night I had a chance to get out with the MINI and my new 4 snowtires (Blizzaks). Oh my goodness, they are awesome. The stopping ability in the snow and ice is incredible. If you've been on the fence about a snow package, worth it so far. We'll see this weekend after the storm.

Went to the eNaugural Ball that was held at the Wyndham Hotel down at Thomas Circle. Heres a link to what was included and who the special guests of honor were. We all had a great time. Although going to work this morning this pretty much sucked.

My brother-in-law was the promoter of the event, so tickets were cheap.

Looks like a great event. We had Mr. Aldrin in house with us for a private dinner beforehand.
