[Sat, July 26 2008] Mach V Mega Colossal Meet & Charity Car Show

The 2008 Mach V Mega Colossal Meet and Charity Car Show will happen on Saturday, July 26, 2008.

This will be our third annual charity event, with proceeds going to benefit Big Brothers/Big Sisters of the National Capital Area. Last year we raised $1300. I'd like to better that this year! Like the last two years, it'll be a car show, with prizes for Best Engine Bay, Best Exterior, and Best of Show, plus a bonus prize for Car We'd Most Like to Own Ourselves. If you don't have a Subaru, there will be classes for other cars, too.

There'll be a voluntary $10 donation to attend. Registration for the car show will be $25 in advance, $45 the day of the show. See the link below for registration info.

Car show setup will be from 9 am to 10 am, with the event beginning at 10 am and lasting until 4pm. The coveted show trophies will be awarded starting at 4pm.

Other attractions: Paintless Dent Repair on-site! Bikini Car Wash!

Location is the (new) Mach V shop, located at:

45690 Elmwood Court
Sterling, VA 20166

<crickets> in here.

I was the only MINI to show up last year. I challenge anybody from DCMM to come and show their car. If you come and enter this year and win over my car, I'll cover your entry fee.

Part of the problem is that the event is scheduled on the same day as the Guinness World Record attempt.

I appreciate Dan and Mach V's attempts to be involved with DCMM & the MINI community, but it always seems that the Mach V events are set up (or at least announced) in conflict with an already existing DCMM event.

Advanced planning to coordinate dates as early as possible (with our Event Coordinator - PlayPlay) can prevent these kinds of things... although the GWR event is obviously much more than a DCMM event, and there's nothing we could have done to change that date.

sounds like a major cop-out to me (MINI's almost NEVER show up at these events....GWR is excuse du jour). he's organizing amongst three brands and DCMM had a Event Coordinator who wanted out at the time and no one had stepped up to take the place as of the scheduling of this event.

I don't really see what the issue is - can't there be more than one event in a weekend???

There were a number of people who could have been asked, including me, and we could have checked the DCMM calendar, sorted out a date without a conflict, and put it on the calendar accordingly. None of us were ever asked or consulted about the scheduling. That's my point. We never are. The dates for Mach V events are just boldly announced without any consultation (that I'm aware of). And of course, that's Mach V's perogative. However, if turnouts are consistently low, the fact that there's always a scheduling conflict might be a contributing factor, no?

Of course there can. Many events can exist... however if you want maximum turnout, you work hard to prevent conflicts. That means coordination & communication.

Look, I'm not trying to trash Mach V. I respect Dan and I appreciate the things he has already done or tried to do with/for us. I'm simply trying to point out that if Mach V wants more MINI turnout, then additional effort should be made to try not to have scheduling conflicts! The earlier we work to schedule it, the more likely we are to prevent that.

Do I expect Mach V's business to revolve around DCMM? No, of course not. I'm simply trying to suggest that if more DCMM turnout is desired, a little better advance discussion & communication on scheduling would be a wise business decision. There have been several Mach V events that I would have liked to attend, but they were always in conflict with other DCMM events that we had already scheduled (before the Mach V event was announced).

Usually our event dates are dictated by things as simple as my own work/travel schedule. If I can't make it, we're not going to have an event. This was one of the only weekends that would work for this event, so this is when we had it. It's not that I was ignoring the DCMM schedule -- I just couldn't work around it. I don't blame anyone for going to the world record thing.

If you're in the neighborhood, stop by our open house. There may or may not be a lot of MINIs there, but there will be a lot (hundreds) of people and a lot of cool cars.

That's fine, Dan. I realize that sometimes things can't be helped. I was only trying to provide perspective for PGT because he seemed so surprised at the consistently low MINI turnouts for Mach V events. Well... that's one of the reasons!

However, for future events, even when you don't have any date flexibility, I strongly encourage you to let us (PlayPlay, to be specific) know as early as possible, so we can put it in the calendar. That way, we're less likely to schedule another DCMM event on that day and cause a conflict (assuming there wasn't already an event scheduled).

I definitely want to come by sometime, and I encourage others to check it out too. I haven't been to the new shop yet. Unfortunately, I can't attend EITHER event (yours or GWR) this Saturday since a friend is getting married in Pennsylvania.

perhaps, but it's hardly the determining factor. how many active DCMM'ers vs. the number attending GWR? I'd venture a guess less than 25% are attending GWR (though I really have no idea).

if you remember our many discussions, low turnout in general is not a new phenomenon (any event...not just Mach V events). Forgive me for offering some incentive to get members out to what's always a good time and of course for an even better cause.

never fails....I tried to do a good thing here and I get static back in turn. too many negative nancies in dis here joint

I wasn't trying to be negative, Dan. I brought the point up because I have seen this happen repeatedly with Mach V events... conflict after conflict... and I don't think it has been properly addressed here before.

You're right that it may not be the determining factor, but it definitely plays a role. It has for me at least, and I suspect there are a number of other DCMM members have also had the same problem too (where they'd like to go to both things).

How is pointing this problem out and trying to encourage less schedule conflicts in the future a bad thing? If anything, I thought I was being constructive and trying to help for future events.

You can't make people come to a specific event - that's beyond the control of Mach V or any member of DCMM (beyond ourselves). However, where possible, you can increase the odds of a decent turnout by not stacking the deck via scheduling conflict. That's all I'm trying to say.

Although I like the Pontiac Solstice body, it feels like driving a Mazda pickup truck.

that's because there wasn't one. it was a fundraiser...the girls only worked if you donated. I'm not sure what was more entertaining...the girls or the guys standing around unable to acknowledge anything else
