Subject: Helmet Certification
The Snell Memorial Foundation (www.smf.org) has officially released the SA/K2005 and M2005 helmet standards and the distribution of these helmets has begun. After 01/01/2006 the only helmet certifications that will acceptable for use at SCCA Solo Events will be: SA95, M95, K98, SA2000, M2000, SA/K2005, or M2005 SFI 31.1A, 31.2A, 41.1A, and 41.2A (www.sfifoundation.com). As an additional reminder, please check your helmet(s) for any structural damage such as cracks or deterioration of impact-absorbing materials under the inner lining. Also, when purchasing a new helmet, size and fit is very important for the best effectiveness.
On further review, Capital Driving Club and NERD Racing have decided that Snell M 2000 helmets (or newer) satisfy the minimum standards required for this type of event. An increasingly large number of HPDE Organizations are allowing Snell M 2000 (or newer) helmets so CDC and NERD Racing will allow this type of helmet for the April HPDE event. Our top recommendation continues to be a Snell SA 2000 helmet with it’s higher standards for multiple impact protection and flame resistance but the Snell M 2000 helmet is sufficient for this type of event.

For the first timers who doesn't have helmet, they may have loaner helmet at the event. Please check with the event organizers.
I'm not sure about the rule this year, if they allow an open face helmet. Any concrete information on this?
Thank you.

I think this should fit the requirement just fine and at a reasonable price.

Yes, great info Chris!
Now, does anyone have a list of places that sell helmets in the area? Anywhere in Frederick or Montgomery counties?

Guys, for what it's worth, I've sold literally hundreds of motorcycle helmets to folks over the years, and I'd be glad to help you get the right fit. PM me if you have any questions.
As far as brands, Bell USED to be the gold standard back in the 1970s and maybe the early 80s. But then they suffered some internal politics, their quality suffered, and their reputation in the industry plummeted. One of my best friends was employed by Bell during those times, and I got to hear lots of the gory details. They may be good helmets today, and the one Chris has illustrated is a very good deal, BUT...
If you're getting a helmet for these schools and events, and if you're thinking about getting a Motorcycle rated helmet, Snell SM2005 (the M stands for motorcycle, A stands for Automotive - SA2005), you might want to consider other brands, too. HJC makes very nice ones for a bunch LESS than the Bell. Lots of other brands as well for reasonable prices.
The most important factor in a quality helmet will be the fit. It's way too involved to detail here, but I'd venture that more than half of the folks wearing helmets in cars, and on bikes, are wearing helmets that don't fit properly, and are therefore uncomfortable or worse, unsafe.
Oy yeah. The most obvious thing, and I almost forgot! Lots more motorcycle helmet dealers than car helmet dealers. Maybe more convenient for you!
If anybody is interested, I'll be glad to answer questions by PM.

To the list also add:
Pete's Cycle Co.800 Ritchie Hwy
Severna Park, MD 21146 (410) 647-5880
A couple of years ago when I was looking for a place to buy my helmet I tried pretty much every store from Annapolis to Baltimore.
Pete's Cycle has the best selection and sale staff is very knowledgable. Finding a SNELL is not so easy. I prefer full face and ended up with an ARAI (profile) - great helmet !! no cheap but vey confortable. http://www.araiamericas.com/
SCCA and CDC and most of the autox events have loaners, which you can borrow every time. If you are not using the helmet regulary using a loaner is the cheapest solution. You might want to purchase a balaclava tho, nothing worse than wearing someome else's sweating helmet.

I will be in heat 3, the same as Lastrega and PGT.

Hopefully, the new tires and rims will arrive in time.
Thanks for all the suggestions everyone. I will check out some of those places and brands. I was thinking about the vintage looking open face Bell helmets as well. Chris, I may join you on Tuesday if the weather and schedule is right. I'll let you know.
Now, what is this I hear about new rims????

Which rims you're going to have?
I'm waiting for the Team Dynamic PR 1.
The helmet information in the first post is 2+ years out-of-date. Now, you can use helmets meeting the 2005, 2000, or 1995 standards (plus K98), but if you still have 1990-spec helmets, it's time to throw them out!
By the way, where could I find the link to the information that you have? Please advise, I would be able to update the post above.
Thank you in advance.
