So, i've read about a few people that recently joined DCMM and about others who are still reading/learning and considering joining DCMM (like myself). I read on another thread that DCMM is looking for 4 board members. My suggestion is to maybe list those positions and state what that person would need to do in order to be a good fit for that position. Hopefully that way it could spark the interest of a few that didn't know they were interested =D

Anyway, just an idea.

The way the elections work is that there are open spots on the board. You volunteer to run for one of the open spots. After the election is held the members that were elected along with the incumbent members hold their first board meeting. In that meeting it is discussed and decided who assumes which position.

In other words you don't run for a specific position.

 

Oh, I see. But there are specific positions that are open, right? It's just in the beginning you run for them all, basically. Can someone just list the ones that are open (even though you wouldn't run for just one, i get it), or no?

 

the only specific position opening up is club president. The other 3 positions are what's called "at large" board members. These board members do not fill specific positions, but are still active as board members.
They could be called upon by the president to help with specific tasks, i.e. sending out monthly membership renewal letters, or perhaps assisting club officers with their required tasks. At large board members also fill the requirement of having 7 board members as put forth by the by-laws.
Sorry if this sounds vague, but after reviewing the club by-laws, this is the best explanation I can come up with.

While it is still vague, it's more descriptive than what i knew before.

 

Actually, as the by laws are written, there are four open positions. NONE of them are specific. Once the board is formed, they determine amongst the members who is best suited to handle which position.

Those wanting to be on the board should be prepared to:

* Attend at least four meetings of the Board per year. These typically take a few hours each
* Support the club in some function with responsbility. These include 1) communications 2)the web site 3)banking 4)membership support 5)event planning and coordination 6)keeping club records up to date 7) maintaining relationships with the local dearerships, after-market installers etc.
* Committ to attending some DCMM events on a regular basis to keep in touch with the members
* Find ways to attract new members

There are four officer positions requried President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer. They hold more responsibility than the three remaining At Large board members.

 

How large does an at large board member have to be?

 

Not always though.

 

No minimum size restriction. Maximum size would be determined by whether or not you can fit in a MINI.

We really need some more people for the board though - so if you're on the fence, please consider putting your name in the ring. We only have 2 candidates so far for the 4 open spots!

Healthy operation of the board is critical for us to remain organized and involved. If you really like the club and are willing to put in some time in to help keep it running, we need you!

 

So far i've seen that the meetings change places between dealerships (and breakfasts, etc) -- are any meetings ever in the same place? Is there like a DCMM home base?
I'm in Rockville, MD so i'm just trying to get an idea of where things take place.

 

The meetings can take place anywhere - VA, MD, DC... at a restaurant that can accommodate us outside of peak hours... or even in a board member's home!

It's up to the board to discuss and decide when and where to meet, obviously trying to be sensitive to where the board members live. That often times means that we'll rotate regional areas where we meet.

So, in short... no, there is no "home base".

We take nomincations from the floor at the annual meeting. So if you are present at the meeting, you can nominate yourself as late as the day of the meeting. You must be present at the meeting to be nominated from the floor.

However, the preference would be that people step forward much earlier.....like now would be good!

It was the feeling early on when forming the club that the more members who served on the board (even if only for a short while) the better off the club would be. It is important for the overall health of the club that many people spend at least some time on, or helping the board. Club members recieve discounts at some locations because of this policy, we have been to some great places to eat, been on some great drives. Some of us had been in other small clubs and knew that board members do not always fill the full term. Having Members at large provide a ready pool of people who can step in should one of the officers (say the President) decides to up and move (to Ca).

Being an officer brings rewards and gives you a new insight to the club. The people who take time to run something like this tend to be good folks. I do miss my time on the board and once my youngun is off to college I hope to spend more time with the club and yes even on the board (if they would have me).

Being a board member is really important. Most of our communication is done through email, and we try to have face to face meetings as much as possible. This past year it was very hard for that to happen, so most of our communication with each other was by email.
This year, it will change to having a board meeting face to face once a month, since there is always something to discuss!
Yes, we are looking for at large board members. We always need that great input of the other board members and as the by-laws state, we need 7.
It is really a great way to learn about this club! Become part of the group that makes this all happen!!
I know that Jay really wants to stop being treasurer. He has such a busy job now that he really hasn't had a lot of time to dedicate to it and I have been keeping the books up to date. While I don't really mind it, it would be much easier if someone took it over (especially someone coming in for their 2 year term!!)
It is not hard being a board member, you just have to be able to answer lots of email, and attend a few face to face meetings. It has been rewarding for me this last year to be a part of it, and I am glad to do it.
The only requirement you need is to be a member. We would LOVE to have new club members join us on the board.

While i haven't officially joined the club yet, i'm considering nominating myself for the board (with the understanding that i need to become a member first.) My question though, is if i let a current board member know thati 'd like to nominate myself - is it a requirement to come to this weekend's annual meeting?

Also, is the term one year, or two?
