Yeah, we hava a green light.

Here is the info from her:

Chris,
Heck yeah it's a go! Cars do need to be decorated tho! Murky has parking in front and along side that would be a great place to get the cars "dressed" for the show. Looks like there would be no problems getting from Murky down to the starting line. They won't start closing streets until 6:45 but it won't be any streets we need to be on to get there. I've been told that as long as the cars are decorated the police will know we are there for the parade, so no secret handshakes or passwords are needed.
thanks for getting this thing on the right track!
let me know if you have more questions.
lj
Btw, Laura (GreenCactus) has mentioned about a parking lot the has enough space for all of us.

Do we need a limit on the # of cars? I'd think there'd be some cap...

Edit: A question. I mentioned to some friends at work that I was doing this. They were surprised I was even considering it, they said people throw stuff at the cars etc at Mardi Gras parades? Anyone confirm or deny? I'm seriously **** about my 100% scratch free car.

Anyone?

I had some beads thrown at me while driving. I didn't see it happen to anyone else, though.

I found another source for the beads. Orientaltrading.com

I bought 25 packs of 144 beads at $4.95/each. They should be here on Monday and shipping was $42.

Unfortunately, I don't believe I will be making this one. The timing just isn't working for me, plus getting the car decorated in the amount of time...

Hopefully next time!

OK, I didn't know if you had arrangements with just a certain group or others of us could 'buy in'. I'd like to 'buy in' if I may.

I didn't make it to the party store last night. Will do so tonight and see what they've got for car decorating. I suggest we post finds and ideas here.

Lastly, it's supposed to be in the 50's Sat & Sun. If anyone needs a place to wash & detail your car for the parade my driveway is roomy and available.

I am in if someone wants to share his/her beads with me (tell me how much it's my share and I will pay cash )

Tomorrow I can try to look around Annapolis and see if a party store has anything ...

Quick questions from James : According to New Orleans tradition ladies show their best attributes to get beads ..is this tradition carried over in
Clarendon ? (He doesn't want to run out of beads .. )

Mark - are you washing "The MINI" on Sunday ?.. I might be up for a wash @ your place: Anyone else?

I'm not sure if I'll do mine Sat or Sunday at this point. Folks are welcome either. If I have to run out to shop a bit or something I'll leave the basics, hose, Mr clean spotless system, etc sitting out. If it gets REALLY warm I might do some more Zaino too. (Polish)

If people check / set up a time with me while I'm home they can use it all, small shop vac, tire dressing, class cleaner and micro fiber etc...

Oh, and if the 'tradition' carries over, are we allowed to make a second lap?

I'm going hunting at the party supply store tonight. I don't know where else to find Mardi Gras stuff locally. Maybe Michaels? I'll check there too and post tonight what I find.

I might try to google image for some mardi gras parade cars after lunch.

Guess I need to check the site more often! Count me in, but the top is not coming down if rain. Is the parade rain or shine? See below for current forecast, but who knows by Tuesday? I work in Rosslyn, so should not be a problem getting up there from the office.

Here is a link to a map of the parking garage we could meet at. It's not free, but I'm not aware of any free lots in that area. It wouldn't more than a few dollars for the short amount of time we'd be there. There should be more than enough space for us on the "roof" which is level 5. If you need a landmark, it's in the same building as Crate and Barrel and Pottery Barn.

As for decorations, I'm going to look at a party store to see what I can find. I do plan on putting lights on the outside of the car. I have plenty of lights, so if any one wants to borrow some they can.

Thanks for the info.

What time should we be at the parking? Does 6pm sound right?

6:00 PM sounds good to me. I found some beads last night @ the Party Store in Anna but couldn't find any decorations for the MINIs.

Just ran into Green Cactus at the party Store.

I had pretty good luck. But then I was feeling desparate so I was happy they had anything at all. I got some foil garland, some streamer sign things that say Mardis Gras, a couple cardboard printed faces etc., two large plastic masks that I hope to tape over the headlights and light up... Etc. I also got a cheap plastic hat and some metal whistles to say 'Hi' to the crowd with.

As I was checking out I saw a Blue MINI pull in next to me. I figured it was another Mardi Gras MINI shopper but no. I dropped my stuff in the car and went to the office store and bumped into the MINI owner. It was someone I sometimes see a couple times a week on the parkway. I filled her in about DCMM. She seemed interested so hopefully she'll some meet us sometime.

Now I just hope the rain holds off! I wanna do this top down!

58 warm car washin' degrees tomorrow. I got a new filter and bottle of soap for the Mr Clean car wash system. Gonna clean up "The MINI" and offer my driveway to any who need to do the same to prep for the parade.

Of course, if you're not garaged at night I have to warn you it's supposed to rain Monday.

Looking forward to seeing folks at the shop on Tuesday.

Is it me, or does Mardi Gras seem like it's earlier every year?

mmatarella: really looking forward to seeing your Chili Red Cabrio for some inspiration for mine!

Thanks Murky!

Ok folks. I'm confused. We're meeting at both Murky and this garage at 6 pm?

Does anyone know where the staging area for the parade is? You don't just show up and pull into a running parade of course. There's a street(s) where they line em up and get things in order... Some of us know Arlington not at all, and I'd hate to be running in circles trying to stay together getting staged.

Assuming we can find out in time where the staging area is I think we need to simplify the plan. Meeting at Murkys', then the garage, then the staging area seems like too much in a short span of time. I know I can't drive around at normal road speed with the decorations on the car. Have to do that in the final staging area...

Weather forecast is improving! This should be a blast!

I will try to come by Murky to say 'hello'. My MINI is afraid of heavy traffic and Mardi Gras beads... LOL. So, probably will ride the Stella Scooter to my Gf's house on Jackson St and walk over. Looks like it will be a fun event!

The link above for the parade is dead. They changed the page to...
http://www.clarendon.org/mardiGrasParade.html

I hope the list of participants the police have is not the one on the site, we're not listed.. When I did the Xmas parade in Oldtown last year they even brought around dogs to sniff the cars!

There is nothing on the site about the staging...
