Actually, the article is over a year old (Nov/Dec 2006)... it was written right as the R56 came out.

Thanks for sharing, though - it's a good read anyway!

Ack! You're right - I misread the Dec 2006 to be Dec 2007 :-)

Sorry for the false alert!

Was looking through back issues of Winding Road and found a series of continuing articles that listed the top 50 driver's cars. The original issue(Jan/Feb 2005) listed # 50 through #41. Each subsequent issue listed the next 10. The Mini appeared in the Sept/Oct 2005 issue and was listed #3 behind the Porche Carrera S and the Ferarri F430!!!. I know this is ancient history, but its still nice to read such a positive review of something I get to drive everyday.

Thank you for the info.

Here you go.

The explosive little Mini, however, can hold it’s own in today’s daunting world of automobiles. It’s backed up by a heritage of conquering Goliaths, and after driving one it’s not hard to see how the little Brit could win rally stages. The unbelievably nimble chassis is easy to chuck around in ways that don’t seem healthy for such a tiny object, and the lack of power can actually add to the fun because momentum and smoothness become more important than all-out speed. The steering and chassis fuse beautifully to reveal the car’s limits and communicate what the wheels are doing. Efficient, cheap, and light is a simple idea, rarely done well. The Mini pulls it off with stunning results.

PROS: Wants to turn; rubber-free steering; cheaper than some Kias
CONS: Some Kias have more power; chick-car image
Best of the Bunch: Cooper S
Power: 168 hp
Torque: 162 lb-ft
0–60: 6.8 sec
Engine: 1.6 supercharged I-4
Price: $20,400
