[Sat, Nov 17th @ noon] Baltimore County Bridges n Backroads Blitz
Hey Y'all
Today I finshed plotting out and running the route for the aprez-breakfast run for this Saturday, November 17.
The route starts at MINI of Towson and runs for 59.3 miles (drove it twice to double check distances) around the Loch Raven watershed and nearby towns.
As the name implies, the majority of the route, once we escape Towson, consists of winding coutry roads. We'll pass over the reservoir and streams numerous times. While a couple of bridges are new, most are the old steel span bridges. I even included a trip through Baltimore County's only covered bridge.
If you're a fan of twisties, this is the route for you.
The leaves are starting to turn bright yellow and red on many of the trees. If they stay on the trees through the weekend, it should make the ride as enjoyable for the passengers as it is for the drivers.
Following the run, we will stop at www.andynelsonsbbq.com for lunch. Andy Nelson, a former Baltimore Colt and transplanted Alabama native, makes incredible southern style ribs and pulled pork barbeque along with other delicious dishes.
If you're interested, Maxicooper has placed an RSVP sign up on the event calendar. Hope to see you there.
Bill

Wow..this sounds very interesting. One of the first drives I went on after I bought my car, was up to Lochraven. Very pretty up there.
Way to go, Bill!

and.. um...you might want to put an "n" in the thread title.

hmmmmmmmmm.... I'll have to think about this now. My son has a dental appt at 3:00 and Mapquest says the restaurant is 25 minutes from the dental office. So... I'd have to bring him with me and hope we don't run late (that would be a first !).
I might just go to MoT b-fast and not join in on the run. I hate to miss this run though... sounds like a great route !! Thanks for all the planning, Bill.

Come and join us, bring you son along.

Just to be on the safe side, I would estimate the run at 1- 3/4 to 2 hours.
That would still give you time for the run, but you may need to skip lunch.
Perhaps, if everyone shows up early, we could depart earlier, say 11:30 ish?

Thanks, guys. I'll join in on the run and if it runs late, I'll just grab something to eat on the way to the dentist.
I'll just have to bring my son's toothbrush with us so he doesn't scare they hygienist or the dentist... he's my future brother-in-law.
See you all on Saturday morning.

I am a newbie and this is going to be my first run. Hoping someone can fill me in on what to expect, what to bring, protocols, etc. (There is probably a thread on this topic but I didn't find it.) Do the runs go on, rain or shine? Also, I had planned on driving solo, is that lame or should I make an effort to recruit a co-pilot? I've been thinking about those Balto County roads since I got my MINI so I am looking forward to this and meeting everyone!!
Welcome Aboard!
Hey Hazmat-
First, you're gonna have some great fun! Wolf617 knows how to find great roads (I know, I've followed him!).
Second, solo or with co-pilot, either way is just fine. You'll be following somebody, so all you have to do is drive safely and play follow the leader. Maybe the toughest thing to do for a first-time run is to know how much distance to allow between you and the car in front. Just use your common sense, and try to keep close enough so that somebody doesn't pull out in front of you from a side street (it spoils our parade). Equally important is to remember not to tailgate. Most folks don't like to be followed too closely.
Each driver is responsible for the car behind, so if the car following you disappears, I think it's customary to stop on the side of the road as soon as it's safe to wait until they catch up or the leader issues instructions on the radio.
Most importantly, don't ever feel pressured to drive faster than your comfort level. Sounds easy and logical, but I bet we've ALL gotten in over our heads in group situations. So just drive at your own pace, and if it's not comfortable, use your radio to check in the the leader to let them know.
Third, you might want to invest in an FRS/GMRS radio (they're usually sold in pairs, for about $45 or less). If you haven't heard about these, they're like walkie talkies. Two-way radios that we use to communiate stuff about the run. Like a turn coming up, hazard in the road, somebody didn't make it through a light and we'll wait for them, etc. There has been some talk about switching to one of the higher power channels in the future (GMRS) so if you get a radio, be sure it has both bands. Technically, the FCC requires users to buy a license to use the GMRS frequencies, and so far we don't use those. We use a main channel of 7, with a sub-channel of 21. that'll make sense when you find a radio. Hope that helps.
Oh yeah. there are some little things like having a full tank of gas, being sure your tire pressures are good, taking a pit stop BEFORE we start the run. That's all I can think of.
Okay club, what did I forget?

Hey Hazmat,
Glad to see you're coming!
Follow Hypnohealer's advise and you'll do fine. Since this is your first run, it will probably help you out if you ride close to the front. That way there will be less chance of you getting lost (Maxicooper...jk) and the more experienced runners can play out back
.
Don't worry about flying solo. I'll be by myself too. Don't need anyone puking on the lounge leather.
I'll have a coupla extra radioes so you don't have to rush out and buy any before the weekend.
Have fun. Relax. Everyone in the club is friendly. We don't bite(unless you get too close to my BBQ).
See ya Saturday.

Anyone interested in convoying from around the Virginia Beach, VA area? I'll have to chat with the hubby and see if he'll put off some modding to his GT500 this weekend.
Welcome..welcome..welcome..
This will turn to be a really fun run indeed.

By the way, don't forget to RSVP

I forgot our two local clubs are involved in our Down Town Norfolk Christmas Parade.
We also have a puppy to consider. Although, she did the Dragon Run the first week in November better than I did.

I used the patch behind the ear, but apparently using the entire patch is not
how to do it. Others on the run explained to me that I should've only use 1/4 to 1/2 of the patch. My vision was so messed up for about 48 hours. After hearing the advice about reducing my dose, The Dragon was the next days run. Lets just not go there.
I stayed with it as the passenager,
which was not
my plan. The Hubby enjoyed himself.Actually, the next breakfast meet will be on Sat Dec 15th. I'm not sure if we're going to have any casual activities after the breakfast, (we normally do though
).
