50mm K04 turbo has arrived!

I went from the OE 37mm turbo, to an upgraded k04 47mm turbo, which really helped with bringing the car alive! But I felt there was still some left on the table to extract from the engine...

I bring you the 50mm turbo...

OE 37mm Turbo

50mm

OE 37mm turbo vs 50mm turbo

I have some work to do now to get my custom setup all finished up.

1) I have an aluminum cold side charge pipe that I'm going to weld a recirculation valve connection on; I'll then block off the OE location for the BV on the turbo.
2) I want to relocated my battery to the cabin so I can move the coolant overflow tank and occ in the area the battery is currently in... so that I can make room for my custom cold air intake.
3) My CAI will have a box to make it a true cold air setup. Still need to get all that fabricated.
4) I want to get my head ported to flow amazing... and forge the internals.
5) Finally, I want to port, polish and ceramic coat the exhaust manifold and turbine housing.

Shooting for 350HP on pump gas. The car is currently sitting at 2980lbs (stock is roughly 3220lbs), I'm also looking to drop about another 100lbs off the car when I'm done with this setup.

The turbine for the bigger turbo is a 50mm x 44.5mm.

It's a custom setup I had made.

I may test the 50mm compressor with the OE turbine wheel. Of course it won't peak as much up top, but could spool fast and maybe get more tq in the low and mid range for extra fun daily driving.

so you got a local shop to throw you together that? or did you order it through a more known place. but regardless I don't think youll need larger than that until you get some new internals so you can push 30 psi =D

Slow. To be honest it'll probably take me a year or more to get back to this. Which sucks because I have this turbo, an extra exhaust manifold to port, sway bar, wheels... etc... to install. I launched my own company earlier this year, so I've been focused on that. I'm sure that'll keep me busy for at least a year.

I'm really bad about not recording progress. I've done that on all my cars... and I've always done unique stuff. I wish I had a videographer following me around.

It's been almost a year in the works! Still not quite close to completing, but today I'm a step closer.

Long story short, I've been told the 12 blade may cause surge in the upper RPM range. So I sourced a 9 blade turbine that is the same size (44.4mm x 50mm) and has taller blades. The company claims it will spool faster than a 12 blade turbine of similar size. The major benefit to the 9 blade is that it will flow a lot more than the 12 blade which should prevent any surging up top.

Thoughts? Feedback?

*9blade produce less backpressure off boost vs. 12blade design too..possibly some weight savings too. General consensus is less is more though. Cant wait to see how things shape up for you.

I currently run a GTD (47mm) turbo with Manic Stg 3, it's fun for sure. You'll really like it.

A slow process. With my coffee company as my current focus this has been put to the side for now. I'm slowly gathering parts when I can, but I probably wont have this on the car until sometime next year. Once sales ramp up in the coffee company, I'll start playing around with this stuff more. Stay tuned... it'll be fun when I do dive into this all again.
