Upgrades Hp Gain?

Alrighty I just ordered some parts for my cooper.
1) K&N FILTERCHARGER INDUCTION SYSTEM
2) NGK SPARK PLUGS - MULTI-GROUND PLATINUM
3) NOLOGY HOTWIRES SPARK PLUG WIRE SET
4) BORLA CATBACK EXHAUST SYSTEM
5) UniChip ECU

What sort of horsepower will these mods give me?

That is just about what I want to do to my car. I have been told that unless you are racing, the plugs and wires are just bling. Makes sence to me.

I talked to Mr. Mini-Madness himself a few days ago. I asked him what I would need to do to get 115 to 120 hp on the street. He said that a CAI or a short ram or a high flow filter to start. You need to get more air in the engine. Then a high flow exhaust. Got to get rid of the bad stuff. Let the car "breathe" better. Then a ECU flash. He estimated that these mods could eliminate the drivetrain loss and put all 115 hp on the street if not a little more. It would depend on the ECU flash and how much air you can get in and out of the engine.

He said that a new cam would be the next step after that. He said that the header pipes aren't going to do much and they aren't cheep.

Since it makes since to me that the free flowing wires and hotter spark will only make gains at very high revs, I didn't ask him about the wires.

I'd shoot Mini-Madness or the guys at Alta or any of the tuner shops here an email and they could give you an educated guess on the gains. The only way you will really know is to put your car up on a dyno and test before and after.

I would guess that you would put down about 108-110 hp to the wheels

I would also suggest adding the Texas Werks Engine Damper and or these http://www.mini-madness.com/index.as...ROD&ProdID=110
I have the TW Engine Damper and it made a big difference for me. (you'll really notice it in 1st gear....obviously)

Hey Alex, you cheated me out of 4 HP! Seriously, I was at 116 with the Magnaflow catback at the wheels, and just a few tenths under 124 after the GIAC ECU remap. And let's not forget the 2-3 foot lbs of torque increase, which I feel much lower in the rpm range (around 3000 rpm). Great mod (for those interested see the thread on this forum, where I posted the dyno results)!

Professor Dave,

Did you try MTH? How does GIAC compare to MTH?

Thanks,

retroom

Those parts wouldn't yield much if anything. You would feel the most from the UniChip. But, that's alot of money to drop for the gain.

What do you have to back this statement?

he gave just as much backup for the statement as the person saying they made lots of power.....so believe neither

I can say that intake, exhaust , and "other" ECU tuning won't weild much power in an MC compared to how much you spend and that's backed up by my experiences modding my cooper for the past 4 years. Now, maybe GIAC is some magic ECU on the cooper and they found some special trick that no one else has....but somehow i doubt it.

I think there are various vendor options that provide enhancing ecu software, I just don't see unichip being the end all.

I looked into MTH, but wasn't confident that I could flash the ECU myself. I think their tuner file advertises around the same performance or slightly more than the GIAC. The price was right on the GIAC, and their reputation is very solid.
