Benefits from a lighter weight pulley?

Are there gains to be had by going with a lighter weight pulley?

Or are pully mods a S thing only?

It weighs less, & spinning it has less rotational mass. Same effect as a lightened flywheel, but to a much lesser degree.

i have wanted to put a Alta 0% light weight crank pulley on a cooper to see how it feels. it should rev up faster like the S does and give it a bit of more usable power. i have been installing a lot of them, and would be happy to install one for you if you want to drive over to see me.

keep in mind that the stock non-S pulley is only 1.36 kg (2.99#)
and the stock MCS pulley was originally 3.234 kg (7.11#)
but was changed recently in 2005 to one that's about 5.5#.

Factory part = 2.99 pounds
Alta part = 0.9 pounds
2 pound reduction.

No it is not as big a reduction for say a 02-04 MCS or even a 05-06 MCS. But still 2 poiunds is two pounds.

There isn't a lot of tuning options for Coopers. The majority of people see it only as Intake and exhaust mods. This and a larger throttle body are two areas where every little gain can be tremendous. At a buck fifty it is less than a CAI or cat back. About the price of a header. Still looking for a throttle body for MC

According to Alta, the stock part is over 7.2 pounds.

What's involved in installing a part like this, cost-wise?

So is the stock part just way too heavy, or is there some sort of risk associated with this aftermarket part (despite what the maker asserts)? Moderate weight savings is one thing, but this part weighs almost 90% less - what's the deal? I'd probably never seriously consider buying one, but I'm just curious.

Remember we are talking about rotating weight. The theory is for every gram of rotating weight saved it is like removing 4 grams non rotating weight.

The logic on the light weight pulley and a light weight fly wheel is to allow the engien to ACCELERATE faster. Get into the power band Quicker.

It is not some magical "Sauer Kraut" horse power we are talking about, like adding decals to increase horse power. To add horse power we would be talking intake and exhaust system mods, head mods, bore the block, stroke the crank....
