light bulb turned on..

so ive been doing alot of thinking/research on easy power on a justa. customizing, fabricating, anything for a little boost. ive come across an idea that just seems to keep popping back up in my head. my 2012 cooper has a throttle body with an i.d. of 62.23mm, the plenums i.d. is unknown at this point but will figure it out soon. while the cooper s of the same year has a throttle body, with the same mounting holes it seems, is 68.58mm i.d. 6mm of diameter in terms of air flow seems like a great gain. i know the computer system would need tweaking. and yes, the connector from the harness is on the opposite side but it appears to me, (someone who works on these vehicles daily) that it is the same throttle body housing with a larger throttle valve and just flipped upside down. now with modification done to the manifold to adapt to the larger thorttle body, does anyone else have any slight bit of input toward this idea? maybe past attempts at something similar or similar things done to other vehicles. i dont know of what the gains would be from this, but larger throttle means more air means more power (in many ways than just one) i know people have done this on the r50, but im just looking for more feedback on the idea. ideas? thoughts? opinions? its all welcome.

I can't speak for a 2012 Cooper, but there were a few aftermarket enlarged throttle bodies for the R50 (and R53). They threw engine codes, gave negligible gains, and were withdrawn from the market. It wasn't a limiting factor for power and it was more productive to focus elsewhere.

I'm bring back this thread for the non s owners out there. I got my hands on an n18 throttle body, and it fits and runs perfect without a check engine light. Are there any gains? I can't feel anything but it does have more low end pick up. Nicely matched to my intake and headers. I'd say it's a success. Maybe with tuning there could possibly be some more gains. That's is all.

Interesting. The headers probably have more to do with the slight bump in power, but it is good to know it won't throw codes. Did you keep the rest of the air intake (from the grill back to the air filter box)? Or did you pick up a custom intake? I see you dropped the cat (why no codes just from this?) and resonator and used a Magnaflow, but could not find where you mentioned the intake mods.

IMHO, there is not much tuning available because of the variable valve timing setup, but I could be wrong.

I have a custom kn Apollo setup with silicone tubing. I have had the headers for about 5k miles and have felt minimal gains, tuning is available through vivid racing for the base model. Don't know much about it, probably will look into it soon.

I do have a check engine, but it's for the no cat. I just delete it and let it come back every so often. But no other codes. Just one, p0420 o2 after cat insufficient blah blah.
