Get a Torque Arm Insert. I got the NM and love it. Search the forums for it but it's only like $60 and very easy to install and you'll notice a big improvement in your shifting and even power delivery right away.

Save it for something bigger like an intake, intercooler, or exhaust. Even better put it in a fund for suspension work.

All good suggestions, but I'll throw a couple more at you. It depends what you're looking for.

- 19mm rear sway bar
- New head unit with bluetooth, aux, USB, etc
- Window tint

How about a Helix Short Shift kit. For $150, you can get it and have it installed.

A rear sway bar is only in the OPs budget if he's going to install it himself. I had a 25mm installed and can highly recommend it!. The faster you push the car into corners, the tighter it plants itself on the tarmac.

One cheap and easy upgrade would be a K&N drop-in filter.

The NM torque arm bushing is one of the best bang for the buck mods for a 2nd gen MINI.

Go for a Helix short shifter and an NM torque insert. You can do both of those for $150 if you do your own install. The torque insert will only take 15 min. The Helix will be about 1 1/2 hrs. Both will require the car to be on jack stands or ramps. Lots of info here on both installs.

I'm interested in this too. Are there any mods for more power or quicker acceleration?

Not for less than $150. I just installed the DDM intake ($230) and it is excellent. A little more grunt but a bunch more growl during WOT. Now it sounds like it should.

Do you have a link to a driving school that will teach you anything meaningful at this price point?

That's about double his budget, but I'll definitely be looking into it for the wife and myself.
