overheating!!!! need help
overheating!!!! need help
i have a 03 mc and its over heating i have replaced the radiator cap and thermostat and this over heating the fan comes on and everything its fine on the high way but every were else it over heats even at idle siting in the drive way im stumped
Hey buddy,
im no mechanic but i know that it could be the low speed fan resistor. what you can do to monitor the actual temperature (its in celsius i beleive) is put the key in the ignition @ the zero position, then hold the stub on speedometer. move the key to right before ignition then let go and youll see numbers, go to 19 and leave it there. then it will toggle from on and off, select off another set of numbers appear starting @ 0. Go to 7 and start the car and you can monitor the temperature rather than looking at that dummy needle.
I currently have the same problem and i know i need to switch out the thermostat and get a resistor of the same kind but higher in quality and do the soldering myself.
i havent fixed any of it yet but when i go stop and go traffic i put on the a/c and the high speed fan comes on and keeps the temp between 93 and 96 and cycles back down.
btw, if you set up your car to observe temp heres what youll notice... regular operating temp for low speed fan is between 93 and 96.
if it heats up past those numbers once it hits 108 then the high speed fan comes on and goes up to 112 and cycles back down. very scary stuff.
i also have my coolant reservoir tank over flow (then goes back to empty) if i let it heat up.
do this at your own risk!

water pump has been replaced already idk what else to replace im gona spray down the radiator in the reverse direction today to get some junk out of it but still even with junk on the radiator it shouldnt over heat sitting in the driveway
Bet the powersteering fan is jammed...blowing the fuse that it shares with the radiator...this was changed on2005+ cars...
does tha fan EVER TURN ON?!
With the infamous low speed resistor blown, the fan still will run preventing the car from overheating.
Solution..short term...unplug thr ps fan, replace fuse...then order a ps fan, install it ASAP...easy diy.

ok the radiator fan runs cause when i turn the car off its still runing to cool it off and soon turns off but how does the p/s fan cause it to over heat plz explain and my ac dont work so its not on anyway

I wonder if your engine temperature sensors are failing and not properly starting the cooling phases soon enough. If you can, hook up a monitor to the ODBII jack and watch the engine temps. I _think_ you should average 210-230F (98-110C) unless you switched to a lower temp thermostat. I've read somewhere you can see the temps (in Celsius) on the display, but forgot where and what the sequence of buttons was to hit.
thanks man but iv changed the thermostat with the new gasket and i toped off the coolant and i just test drove it for about 20min and i think its fixed the temp gage stayed in the middle the hole time even during spirited driving

If you still have the motor exposed try tapping on it. Others have had luck making it work without removing the door panel with a swift punch right were the motor is mounted. And although I cannot recall the specifics, there are threads on here which detail repairs for that problem. Try searching with google, using North American Motoring and the search term and you might actually find more relevant posts then using the search feature here on NAM.

If you look at the other people with coolant/fan problems youll notice there is typically a mention about how that is a 'dummy needle'
