Busted CVT options
can anyone help me with these two transmissions? both from the same site, the first one i think is the early CVTs but the second one said something about 06 up, 09G, hydrodynamic torque yadda yadda. but the second one is cheaper. is that second one the Aisan 6 speed CVT?

The 09G is the Aisin auto - it's not a continuously variable design - it has actual gears at particular ratios.

Also, I would be cautious with europeantransmissions.com. I've seen a few reviews here and there saying they did not honor their warranty. I've also seen a video where one of the technicians is describing how to remove the valve body on the CVT and he begins to unscrew bolts which he just said you should not unscrew. He quickly moved to other bolts and rescrewed bolts he should not have unscrewed. So, my impression was their rebuilds may be careless. Here's the video:

I have an 06 R53 with the Aisin 6-speed auto, works great but not an ideal set up for the track so i'm planning a winter project to swap it out for the getrag 6-speed. I'd obviously will try to sell the auto trans to help recoup some of the costs. Still trying to figure out what the computer issues are going to be.
Just got a price from minitransmissions.com, John Tee in the UK. ABout $2500 US, with 2 day shipping for a rebuilt CVT.
I'll probably go this route and install myself. I need to get my new garage in order before I tackle this. Hoping to have it completed by the holidays.
Hey Im an optimist!

Update
Ok so we reprogrammed the entire car and it works great now, no check engine light, and we even removed the PND display in the cluster. We did this all without doing any hack wiring. But we did have to reprogram every computer in the car.
We are going to try to wire in a clutch switch, and reverse lights now.

If you have the right software and interface, you should be able to do it on your own. I believe there is a special coding number that identifies the main features of the car that is kind of the key to it all. It could be tricky to get right though, and the ECU can only take 14 reflashes before having to be thrown out, so proceed with caution if you go that route...
Awesome. Thanks for info. Perhaps way motorworks can help me find the "way?". Sorry, but had to say it. Can I presume another option is simply to use the propr ECU and harness? I am asking cause I bought a $500 DOA 03 mini or at least I was told it is DOA. No time to t/s yet. They sold it cause they were told cvt died. I really think it is cool and want to fix it. Since so little invested, I can afford to spend a bit on eng/trans. I'll do all the work. Thanks again!

Thank you for the information. I will likely need to do this int he future. Does this require sending the modules to you in ATL, or do you have to have the entire car? After a bit more investigation, this is looking more and more like what we are going to ahve to do. THe seal on the CVT input from the engine (Is there a torque converter on a CVT, like a standard automatic?) is where all the fluid is leaking from. Not certain if it is worth taking the two apart, only to replace a main seal on the CVT, only to have it die in a short bit. Especially given the fact this one likely was driven some time without fluid. I dumped in two qts, and it did not even begine to flow out. Thanks again!

I'm not sure if any of you are interested but in Florida and California (possibly more states, those are just the ones I know of) there's a class action lawsuit against BMW for the CVT transmissions in 2002-2006. For Florida the contact info is Lance Harke (305) 536-8220. They can help you join the lawsuit to get any money you may have spent out of pocket back.
Sorry I thought I replied to this thread......... the CVT was NOT bad!!! Just for the heck of it, I changed the spark plugs, wires and coil, and she runs good as new. Currently at 114K miles. Those idiots at Flow Mini of Raleigh almost cost me a fortune.
Just goes to show you cant trust 'em (and I never do) I just didnt have the time to troubleshoot but glad I made time. My daughter is pretty happy now, if only the HK amp didnt take a crap and her radio worked she's be smilin. 500 bux for a used one is not inthe budget right now.

No kidding! Would be great as a parts car at minimum.

Hate to be a downer, but how long do you plan on keeping the car? Reason I ask is although your CVT is good for now, it will almost certainly fail before 200k miles. The longest I've run across one lasting is around 190k miles. Mine lasted 120k miles. Start planning...

Wow! Incredible document! Thank u very mich. sorry for spelling errors, replying with iphone and very fat, blunt thimbs.
Yes , actually just started working on it. Trans out. Believe front seal is culprit for massive oil leak. It apears as though oil is supplied tk the front seal area and is supposed to redirect down four runners. I think some of the oild is leaking out the seal instead. Got one on order.
Is the redline cvt trans fluid an ecceptable substitute for the specified esso? Thanks again!

Here's another helpful link - a pretty thorough parts catalogue for the CVT:

After 30 plus years of auto repair, fixing to learn something new. My sons 2003 mini has cvt issue and the dealership in Tinley Park, Il. simply said replace the unit. I aint fallen for it and will study all possible repair possiblities.
What's the CVT doing? Might be able to help point you in the right direction.
Are you getting the SES light or EP where gear selection is usually displayed?
Mine did display warnings and because of that, I was able to pinpoint it as a bad stepper motor on the valve body - about a $400 part, and does not require removal of the transmission, just the pan and valve body. I never ended up putting it in though - I went with a 6-speed manual swap as more long term investment/fix.
