custom CAI...

so i've been lookin at all the options we have for intakes...the DDM, vip, apollo. and the diy cone. all seem fine but kinda pricey (excluding the cone). the only problem i see with the cone is that since it is behind the engine, there is no direct airflow to it and it would just be sucking in the warm air from the engine so it would negatively effect the whole purpose. i know you guys that have done it say you've seen a little gain in mpg and what not but i was trying to think if there was another diy we could come up with. is there enough space around the lower grill where we can place a cone filter and space for tubing? or how about removing a fog light and setting up a ram air situation? any thoughts???

Here is a good thread on non s -- CAIs

https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...man-cai-2.html

Post # 46 is what I did to reach cool air -- The fog light idea is good, but the access plumbing would be very difficult.

If I had to do it over again I would copy the Defenders of Speed system where they turn the apollo into the cowl.

https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...os-intake.html

The apollo can be found at reasonable prices on ebay.

cool. so i just took a quick look at the engine compartment and it looks like the only space for the air inlet tube would be its stock position. for the fog light to work i would need to remove the washer fluid basin (which i never use anyways). but it doesn't even look like the stock inlet is even getting much air at all because no air is directly getting to the opening.

If you look at the DDM the entire back is open to allow max air to the cone, the rest of the box acts as a heat shield and the OEM tubing is still bringing in cool air. This is the way I plan to go.

Remember this is a normally aspirated engine and the air is being drawn into the intake (not pushed) and the up front-stock position is in a area where cool air flows. If you measure the temps with a infared thermometer the temps are much cooler up front than in the rear of the engine compartment. While the fog opening looks interesting it brings a new set of challenges besides the routing, what do you do in a heavy rain storm?

All in all -- remember -- we are splitting hairs here, as there is not much gain either way.
