There are some of us who already assume there's a tranny conversion in our future, as soon as we get to the point where we need it. The tough part is finding a way to make the tranny conversion necessary. We're not all obsessed with making 300whp. How 'bout 150 or 175? In fact, I'll take everything I can get short of a blower, and yes, I know that's not much.

If it was as "cheap" as it is for an MCS, then there would be some quality turbo kits out there. But instead, there is a bunch of crap for suckers who don't know the limits of what they have. 200bhp out of a stock cooper with a midlands tranny...uhh...what do you guys think?

Before anyone jumps on me...by "cheap" I mean not having to spend thousands on conversion before the actual kit can be used...

The tranny is just part of it...if you want 180 hp out of your car, it may be possible with just changing the pistons and adding a small turbo...after the tranny, but for more than that, I would want forged internals. I think that when more people do the 6 spd swap, we will see a lot more high powered coopers.

That's exactly what I've been thinking. In the meantime, I still grin when I drive my lowly JustaCooper, so I can wait.

To speak more directly to the guy who started the thread, I've seen the "What about this R50 turbo kit?" question asked here plenty of times. However, I've NEVER seen anyone post about a happy experience putting one on their own MC.

I'm not saying this particular kit doesn't work (I have no idea), but the R50 has been around for more than 6 years now.....and NAM currently has 56 thousand members.....and I can't find a single thread about a successful turbo kit installation on an MC.....

Maybe this kit is different, who knows? But there are plenty of people lurking here waiting for someone to finally post some positive results.

With the 6sp tranny, I presume the gear ratios are different. I know the pros of the 6sp are obviously things like the ability to handle more power and of course a 6th gear to ease things up a bit while on the highway. But do the new gear ratios make the car a bit slower or anything?

Didn't that car still have a built bottom end capable of handling the air? Also, wasn't that a Jan creation or at least an RMW collaboration with someone else? Either way, if that man has touched it, I'm sure it works.

For a while there I thought I'd missed something -- just needed someone to re-connect the dots for me -- thanks!

Tuls, out of curiosity, why do you have a stock head? Is there a reason that you haven't ported yours?

Just to clarify, the Getrag wasn't available on the R50 until 2005--all 2002-2004 5 speed models used the Midlands tranny.
