mod the stock intake

anyone ever modify the stock intake?

on other cars iv seen new and/or bigger pipping ran for both the inlet and to the manifold. not thinking there would be a HP gain, but maybe open up a nice sound.

any thoughts?

Just adding a K&N drop in filter to the stock air box / intake is a very noticable improvement in both response and sound.

I got an extra 2mpg from my drop-in foam filter. The sound stayed pretty much the same.

I found the same thing when I had a K&N filter in mine. Now that I have a WAY/DDM intake both throttle response ans the sound are MUCH better.

i already have a alta drop in. and honestly think all the CAI's out are a waist without running the air through an intercooler. not sure why noone has made a real one that sits low in the front air dam that will truly get all the cold air it can handle. guess i might tinker with it sometime soon and see if i can free anything up a bit.

Many moons ago a I read a thread on NAM about how the Honda guys modify their stock intakes for better performance and still keep it legal for autox. Something about turning the top portion upside down, exposing the filter to the open air. The poster had done it to his Mini and said it worked great and sounded great. Do a search, you might find it.

K&N or Alta?

I see a lot of posts here for the K&N drop in filter. I've been thinking about adding this to my cooper and have been trying to decide between the K&N and the Alta foam one.

Any opinions?

yea, the cotton vs foam has been discussed a few times...

on the first page of posts- https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...d.php?t=114999

its personal opinion in the end, eveyone has their own reason for their choice.

you can flip a coin? paper rock sissors? or just try one because they both work well.

i see your in englewood, are you new to the mini scene?

I have the K&N typhoon and love it, buddy has the WMW link below and it rocks too. I'm going to build a box around my K&N this winter for next years season-o-cones.

I remember reading about how someone punched a bunch of holes into the bottom of the airbox--like swiss cheese. And someone else made an opening for a hose in the back and ran it to the air vent near the windshield wiper. (Isn't that like the Soundkit?)

I can't see the point in an intercooler on a n/a setup - I doubt the incoming air would be hot enough to have any drop in temperature, then after adding in the extra weight of the piping / intercooler, even if you do see a couple deg. temp drop I doubt it would increase the power enough to offset the added power. Plus that's a lot of money for (very, very) little (potential) power.

Also, the point of a cold air intake is to take in cold air (hence the name). The best an intercooler could do is drop the intake air temp to the temp of the air around the car which with a properly designed CAI would not be that much different from what the CAI is pulling in.

intercooler? not for us, i was stating in reference to the "S" models. they can get air where ever theyed like because it will be cooled.

this is a hot air intake-

this would be a true cold air setup-

puts the filter low and in the front grille for air outside the engine bay.

Ah, I was a little confused with this being in the non-s forum.

I'm not sure i completely understand the idea of doing more then a drop-in on our cars. The air is pulled straight from the grill. I have an intake temperature about 5-8 degrees warmer then outside air.

I'm in agreement here. The only reason I can think of is the open air element might just simply flow more air than a drop-in performance filter. IDK, I am happy with my ITG filter. Best 60 dollars I have spent on my car. (minus the rear sway and springs of course)

i think there would be nearly nothing to gain except the great sound. pretty sure i read here on the forums that someone had conducted a simple test and saw the most improvments with just a drop in.

My worry about dropping the filter or intake down lower (as in the cold air setup pictured in blue bomber's post) is that it could increase the risk of hydrolock in heavy rain/deep puddles.

I usally swap between my Moss Intake and my stock box with a K&N. The Moss is for summer, and the K&N for winter. During the summer months, my Cooper is much less bogged down with the Moss intake and the a/c on.

To make the stock box a little louder couldn't we just remove the resonator?
mod the stock intake-207.jpg
Part 15

has any one tried that?

Whoever has the MiniMania airbox/filter has had to remove the resonator. Supposedly, it can be quite difficult to remove.

I have one. It did take some serious tugging to pull out the resonator.

How did you go about removing it? Is there a differance in sound/ performance??
