Hi, I just purchased my first Mini and was considering changing the 12's it currently has to a 13. I want to keep the classic wheel and maybe go to a 13x7. Would anyone know what size of tire I should use, if there's any modifications required?

Wheel arch fouling is a problem. You may have to cut the opening and install suitable flares. 7" is very wide on a Mini. I've had 13x6. Your ride will be harsher and it will be harder on the suspension components.

Thanks for the response and article. I have to say, I'm second guessing my decision to put 13's on my Mini. When you say a harsher ride, do you mean stiffer/jarring, I don't think my body can handle a bumpier ride...

 

the 13's have a shorter. stiffer side wall, therefore less to absorb bumps...the steering will be a little heavier also

My current Mini has 12" wheels and is the 1st Mini I ever owned that wasn't running 10s. I think the 12s look too big and the 13s look huge. But that's just because of what I grew up with. Personally, I don't see the fascination with going bigger simply for the sake of going bigger when it comes to wheels. If they make a performance difference, or to allow a bigger brake kit, then fine, but just for looks?

 

Tire size should be 175/50 r 13. On a 7 inch rim the footprint will be close to 8.5 inches.

From the looks of it, 13's are a bad idea.

I had wanted larger wheels/tires assuming it would allow the car to huge the road better, but it seems like 12's are sufficient. In addition, I had wanted to replace the 12's since they are so dang hard to find.

Hmm, choices....

I think I'll keep my 12's for a while, I'd rather enjoy my car right now. Thanks all for you input, you saved me from a HUGE mistake.

if that's the case, 10's are the answer.....

 

With 12s you can get a yoko 048r which is supposed to be the bomb. Apparently better than the 032r for the 10s.
