I'm 12 deg b4tdc

I have a 1275 Metro, with HIF-6 (1 & 3/4 inch) and a K&N cone. Stock cam and distrib', LCB

@ idle, warm, 1000 rpm and vacume line plugged I'm at 12 degrees before tdc.

Sorry - don't have my Haynes or my reference CD in front of me to check if that's reasonable for you or not. But I recently had a very good shop tune me and this was their recommendation.

timing

I have a 78 998, Australian.

The proper timing, was determined by putting the car on an exhaust gas monitor, and turning the distributor to the point that made it pass the pollution test!

Many say that's the only way to tune an SU!

Yep - many a web page says that's the only way to get peak performance from an SU, esp if you get into swapping needles: rolling road and an exhaust monitor. As well as saying to be sure your ignition is right on b4 messing with the fuel system.

btw - do you know what you're set at?

No I don't. I had it done by a shop that specializes in pollution work and had worked on other cars with SU carbs. I don't know which distributor is in the car. Some one removed the Vacume advance, and I don't know if they changed the advance wieghts or not. I picked up a distributor at the last swap meet, and plan to go through it and set it up right before my next pollution test in November.

Illinois.

Checked the owner's manual

I checked the Owner's Manual on CD from Heritage

for 69 to 75, 850 & 1000

850 @ 1000 rpm (vac disconnected) 11 deg btdc
1000 @ 1000 rpm (vac disconnected) 7 deg btdc

for 76 to 80

both @ 1000 rpm, vac discon', 7 degrees btdc

This is for a purely stock setup of course - factory spec dist' and plugs etc
I also cross checked to Haynes...

I consider it a starting point.

According to the 76 to 85 workshop pubs per the Heritage CD

For the Lucas 45D4/59D4 dist' :

"Contact Breaker gap is .35 to .40mm; .48mm for a new contact breaker set to allow for bedding in of the contact breaker heel."

The .35 to .40mm is also provided in Haynes

Need dwell too?

That does differ by dist....
45D4 .. non-sliding contacts .. 51deg +/- 5
sliding contacts 57 +/- 5
59D4 54 +/- 5
