Hi from Okinawa Japan

hi all. im new to the mini scene. i live in Okinawa Japan and my friend just bought a mini on friday. and i was hoping you all could help me out! i know next to nothing about minis, but i do know cars. I have a Nissan Silvia S14 and do all the work to it, but i checked out the car and its isanely different! but she loves her car and i want to help her fix it up. so heres what i know

1989 Mini
Automatic
9**cc Carbouretted
RHD

i can take pics and post them up when she gets the car in a couple days. but i was hoping someone could tell me some stuff with the info i have now. like what weight oil, what kind of filter (spin on, or element?) and any other stuff i should know.

Thanks all!

-Ian

Welcome to NAM, oki14! I will move your thread from 1st Gear to the Classic Mini Talk forum for discussions regarding the classic Minis. MINIs from 2002 to the present are the new MINIs.

Welcome Ian. I'm sure the people in the Classic Mini forum can help you out. There's loads of knowledge here so don't be shy to ask questions.

BTW I spent 7 years on Okinawa, but that was some years ago.

Hi Ian,

I was stationed at Kadena & Naha AFB, Okinawa back in 1971-72. Use to drive a Mazda Carol back then.

So your friend bought an 89 Mini. It should have a 998 engine. It takes Castrol 20W50. Find an oil filer that fits a 70's MG Midget w/ a 1275 engine. It's a spin on type filter. In this forum (Classic Mini) someone posted a link to a Mini Service Manual in PDF format. Find it and save it to a CD so you can reference it in the future.

Don't let your friend get too attached to her Mini as she won't be able to bring it stateside. Needs to be 25 years old in order to legally bring to US.

Visit www.minimania.com Go to community forum, log in and start asking questions. That's where all the Classic Mini guys & gals hang out.
