Speedo cable - dead speedometer, tips to fix

My speedometer cable wiggled loose. The speedometer needle started to bounce when it moved, then it would read even more incorrectly, finally it doesn't move at all so the needle is always at 10mph (it's lowest position).

Officer - "Do you know how fast you were going"

Me - "10mph?"

That didn't really happen, but it would make for a good story!

Enough of my cheesy humor.

I checked the cable connection to the speedometer and I tightening it a little bit but it was nothing to cause a problem. I could just barely reach the connection to the transmission. I pulled my hand back out and my glove was completely covered in grease.

Do any of you have any suggestions or tips to fix this? I have large hands and it isn't helping out.

I'm trying to figure out how I could fix it but it's tough when I can't see the cable connection to the transmission at all.

Whoops, sorry I forgot to clarify that.

I have an '81, but the speedo was converted to the center binnacle. So originally it was the right hand side gauges but now it looks exactly like the one in the first picture.

I'd unscrew the cable from the back of the speedo and turn the actual cable inside the housing to see if it's broken. You could then also jack the car up and spin the transmission to see if the cable is turning. It could easily be that the cable has snapped and needs to be relaced. Get someone with small hands to work at the tranny end!

From a friend of mine: "you shouldn't be able to pull out the cable in the speedo cable sleeve."

When the cable is unscrewed from behind the speedometer, I can take the cable and pull it out of the sleeve...
