Help IDing a few things

I have 2 things,so far i need help IDing

First is a VIN. I found one on my mini near the back of the hood. It 17 digits and starts SAXXL.... On Mini Mania it has SAXXL as being 1980-85 but only has 14 digits where mine has 17, which falls into 1990-on, but doesn't list SAXXL. Then it states, from how i read it that their list is for English Built cars only(correct me if im wrong). Could this mean mine is not English built? and if so where can i find more info?

Second I have a plug under my dash that is not being used i would like to at least identify it. Here are some pics. In the 2nd pic it the one im holding. It has a purple, a green with white stripe, and red with green stripe wire.

Pic 1

You haven't given to much info......is it LHD/RHD? and is it Carb, SPI, or MPI? As for the plug in the photos, the only thing I can think of is for a headlight adjustment swtich, which was available with the SPI models and up. You could have a look in the haynes manual at the wiring diagrams and trace the wires. I know alot of guys on here call it the book of lies, but I have found alot of good info when it comes to the wiring.

Sorry about that. It is LHD, Carb. from the motor number and visual inspection looks to be a 998. has 13in wheels and front disk brakes, i dont know the size yet. I have found a few part dates on it to be around late 1990, I can get pics of those if needed. there is no radio antenna (or radio for that matter) or side marker lights unless they have been shaved. washer bottle mounts in front. has external bonnet release. It also has a glass sunroof and german stickers.

I have tried looking some of the wiring up but haven't found any 91+ wiring diagrams.

The Haynes most of us use covers 69 thru 2001 .. the diagrams you seek are there ...

the easiest places to find some dates are on the boot latch and the wiper motor. Each will have the week/year of build stamped on them if they are original parts. Here's the boot latch on my 79

Here are some pics of the electrical connections to my Steering Wheel from the interior harness. As Capt_bj already stated - I also recommend the Haynes manual ('69 - '01) as it has all the wiring diagrams for each year and it is very easy to cross reference wire colors to the devices.

The picture shows three connectors for the steering wheel. I can help cross reference wire colors for devices on the connectors if you need help. There is also a picture of the harness in the dash with evrything removed so you can see the (3) plugs on the harness.

I recently finished my Mini ('79 RHD 998cc) and have a lot of pictures (200 - 300) from the process of taking it down to the shell. I would be glad to help with anything I can.

Hope this helps.......

trigga71 -

Does your VIN end in a letter? Don't forget that the VIN has a sequential portion that may account for some of the extra digits. Does your VIN follow the correct numbers/letters for Saloon (2S), round nose (1), class (depends on car for post 1985), a "1" for LHD, etc.

PM me if you need some more help on decoding the numbers....

It ends in a number, 1 to be exact. And yes it fits the Nov 1985 to Circa 1990 on MM's web site. but the sequential build number part is where it gets weird, for me. They list XXX, which i take as 3 numbers, and now that i think about is dumb because thats only 999 cars built from 85-90. But the "A" or no "A" part threw me as well. But what your saying is that 6 digits in my VIN are fine and it would fall into the 85-90 range. My VIN is SAXXL2S1S21xxxxxx. Here is a pics of the boot latch and sun roof as well.

Boot Latch (21 90)

do you have 3 dials in front of the wheel or a center speedo?

how many fuses are in your box/panel and where is it located?

for what it is worth...while LUCAS is know for many strange things they did maintain one consistent habit: those of you that speak Lucas know that the colors all mean something: White is switched (on when the key is on), unfused; green is switched, fused; brown is unswitched (always on), unfused; and purple is unswitched, fused; so your connector seems to carry an unswitched but fused power feed.

Glancing around a few of the late 80's to 90's wiring diagrams it appears green with white stripe (gw), and red with green stripe (rg) usually went to various marker/repeater lights. Do your 4 way flashers work????

looking at the 1988-on, carb models diagram it appears the GW was used for the coolant temp gauge and rg was almost always a lighting power .... do you have a temp gau and does IT work?

I have 3 gauges in front of the wheel and the temp gauge does work. My flashers did work but don't any longer, I can fell relay click but it ends there. I don't have side marker lights,I've been trying to locate the wiring as it should have them. I forget the number of fuses but I look at when I'm near the car or computer, at the dr's now with a sick daughter.

Flashers not working could be a ground at the bulb or a bad bulb (readily available at local auto parts). I also has a situation where a bulb was on all the time (no flashing) due to grounding.

Front marker lights (2 wires) run along with the headlight wires to each fender area. One power and the other to the bulb holder that is held with screws.

Hope you daughter feels better

I have 4 fuses in the box and a few inline fuses. the box is on the left side, looking at the motor, up near my break servo.

I think i worded it wrong the flashers (blinkers) work fine, the hazard lights don't work. When i got the car the hazards didn't work, got a new relay and worked fine, now they don't.

My daughter had an ear infection, Seems like kids stay sick now days. I've only been to the hospital once after a car accident.
