converting Classic automatic to a 4 speed?

I'm ready to buy. I want a 4 speed, but the best deals I have found have been on the automatics. I have heard stories about the autos and I just love the feel of the 4 speed.

So, my question is... how hard is it to change the tranny out to a stick on these things? I know how to do a tranny swap. I'm just wondering if there's gonna be some kind of body work necessary? will all the linkage fit? Am I gonna have to cut a new hole for the actual shifter linkage or will it fit in the existing hole?

Any help. Thanks guys.

are you planning on changing the subframe as well? they are different although it's not impossible to mount a manual tranny to an auto subframe but it is more involved.

Just wondering what the best way to go about it is. It's kind of a factor in whether or not I decide to buy one of these classic autos, or just say screw it and pay like $1000 more for one that's already a stick.

well if it's only 1000 more at what you are looking at, then go and buy the 4 speed. As you would have to get the manual tranny with it's linkage, a new front subframe, Clutch pedal assembly, clutch reservior, fabricate some lines.........it can be done, but it is just way easier to buy one that is already done.

You will also need an engine as the crankshaft, cylinder block and of course flywheel, etc are different on the auto engine.
Lots of info on the AP Auto on this website under 'Technical Advice'

Cool. That's what I wanted to know. If the crank, and all the other stuff is different, I don't wanna do it. I can do and pay for a tranny swap. NOT for an engine swap. If I was gonna do that, it'd be a v-tec swap. lol.

Thanks guys for the help. I think this thread is ended.

Unless someone else has something to add.
