New mini man!/ With new mini question.

Hey guys I am 18 and I am looking at a mini in Charleston, SC at a place called turkys. I really want a classic mini for my car but I will need it to go to school and work also. I want to get into motors though so I wouldn't mind doing little things here and there to it. Do minis need alot of work? Will I be on the side of the road alot. My parents are saying that because my mom had a spitfire and she had alot of problems.

I really really want one of these and from what I have heard that arn't that bad as far as reliability. I just thought I would ask you guys first.

The car has 115,000 miles on it but I think it was orginally a 850cc and it had a 1000 put into it.

If I go and test drive it this weekend, what should I look for?

Please help me guys I really need the help!

Thanks!

You WILL have to be your own mechanic. You WILL need to get the car into good condition prior to using it as a daily driver.

Luckily, parts are not too expensive and relatively easy to find. The car is primitive so any shadetree mechanic can fix the basics & keep it going....

Find the local Mini owners group (SCUM? South Carolina Ultimate Minis) or look for "SCARGO" on www.minimania.com message threads...I'm sure he can advise you

Suggest you look at the minis offered by and at http://www.classicminiautos.com/
They may be pricier but they will have been better taken care of. Do some research on this site (NAM) and Minimania, com on Turky's and take Minimad's advice and solicit help from a local Mini owner or group. Ask them to look at the car with you. Mini owners know what to look for.

Turky's stuff has to be looked really closely. It ain't as wonderful as he says it is. DO take someone with you that knows Minis. Make Turky's people put it up on their lift to look at it carefully. If you find one you can't live without, he likely won't move on the price, but he might throw in some nice wheels or a roof paint job. The best advice I can give you is to buy with your head and not your heart.
