gas
My Mini runs on unleaded with nothing added. If yours has a new head on it, it can run unleaded. If it seems like it's running weird (sputtering, etc) it might be because you need to add a lead additive. I'd see what some of the more Mini experts say about this though.
I follow the manual and use the highest grade available. Around here that's 91 octane. I also follow Mini's recommendation to use "Top Tier" gasolines, as listed at http://www.toptiergas.com/ I figure the people who built the car probably know better than I what it needs, so I go with their instructions.
Using premium gas in a lower compression naturally aspirated engine can make the fuel to oxygen ration to rich and cause premature ware. Consult the manual. I believe some Minis prior to 1989 were manufactured from cast iron and should be run on leaded fuel only; otherwise you can burn out the valve seats.

Do you have the history on the car. For example, has the head been rebuilt recently. If not, having hardened valve seats installed will be your best investment to avoid the need to blend with lead substitutes like Valvetect. If you don't have hardened valve seats yet and you don't use a lead substitute additive, you will be paying for a valve job shortly.
