Valentines!!!
Valentines!!!
Here is the original HMMS post
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It's that time again! Who's up for providing dinner, love, and laughter on Valentine's Day at our Houston Ronald McDonald House (RMH for short)? For those of you that enjoyed participating in the past, I hope you'll sign up again and for you new members, here's your chance to participate in an event that is guaranteed to leave you with a very warm heart.
Date: February 14, 2009
Time: From 5:00 PM until ~7:30 PM
Place: Ronald McDonald House at 1907 Holcombe Boulevard
Here's what we will be doing:
* Provide and serve dinner to the residents of RMH (approximately forty children and forty adults) that are expected to be staying there on Valentine's Day. This might sound like a lot of people, but as we have observed, since these children are undergoing medical treatment, they don't have the same ravenous appetites that we've experienced with our children. We won't have to worry about excess food, either, as RMH shares its leftover food with similar facilities. While the kids LOVED the fried chicken we served last year, they enjoy sloppy joes and bar-b-que as well.
Here's what we served last year:
Fried chicken - great price from local Kroger
Garlic mashed potatoes - YUM and they were easy to serve!
Green beans - a nutritious staple
Deserts - ambrosia fruit salad, cakes, cookies, etc.
Drinks - soft drinks and tea
Suggestions for other items?
In the past we have also done the following:
* Valentine Cookie self-decorating table - this was a VERY popular table!
* Decorate the tables with Valentine's Day decor. Lay out Valentine cards for the children to fill-out and give to friends and loved ones at the house.
* Give MINI Cooper matchbox cars or plush Valentine's Day bears to all the kids.
* Show the kids and their families our cars and take them for a short ride.
* Guest appearance by local celebrities.
* PAPER TOWELS - the number one item on RMH's "wish list" of basic staples. Can we surpass last year's 342 rolls?
* PULL TABS - bring all that you have collected for donation. We will be able to get more cardboard collection "houses" at RMH.
These are just some quick notes. This is an HMMS event, so ALL are welcome to submit ideas and to participate. As you can see there are many ways to participate even if you cannot be there on Valentine's Day. Just a couple of hours of your time on Valentine's Day and you will leave with a very warm heart!
So respond to the poll attached to this thread and contribute your ideas in a post.
Post here for what you are bringing!!!
Post here for what you are bringing!!!
I am bringing Tea from Chicken Express. They still need deserts guys! Who can make cookies or a cake!?! Lets show'em what the Aggie Spirit can do for people in need!
I still haven't figured out exactly what I'm doing that day, but I should be going to this. Only thing is that I'll probably already be at a conference in Houston during the day so I won't make the drive down, just back.
Just a suggestion, but you might send out a message on fb...I know I'm on that a lot more than nam.
Sweet. we'll keep you informed on where we are going to meet the HMMS (if we do) and you can just meet up with us there. I sent out a Facebook message but ill do another soon.
I'll be there...
I'm looking forward to going to the RMH...
I don't cook, but I will be happy to pick up some premade cookies at the grocery. Should a get enough for fortyish kids? I'll also pick up some paper towels as well. Are we meeting at the TAMU parking lot again at 2:00 pm?
We are going to meet in Lot 50 as always. And I am going to say that 2:00 is the meeting time. That way we can get into Houston before rush hour.
I will let HMMS know and maybe we can meet them somewhere. And we will take a fun way down there.
If we get there too early, maybe we can raid a Walmart and buy some last minute things for the RMH.
So we have Aaron, Gwendolyn and I. James is going to meet us in Houston. WHOO HOO
We are glad you are coming down on Saturday to join us to serve the Ronald McDonald House Valentines Dinner. HMMS members will be going directly to RMH and not meeting somewhere to drive over together (since they are coming from all over the map - Katy, Clear Lake, Woodlands, etc.). Your drive down sounds like fun. We'll be meeting at RMH around 5 PM to get set up, load up a MINI with paper towels (one of RMH's biggest needs) for the photo opportunity, then start serving around 6 PM.
In case you want to bring some items in addition to what you already committed to bring, I suggest some Valentine's Candies and of course more Paper Towels. In lieu of bringing items, some people are donating money to help defray the cost of the big ticket items (chicken, mashed potatoes, etc.). And be sure to bring your camera too!
See you Saturday!
P.S. Be sure to introduce yourself if we haven't met before. I'll be wearing my one-of-a-kind, made-by-myself tie-dyed HMMS t-shirt.
Hey! So my mom ran into the Chicken Express owner and told him what we were doing and he decided to donate all the tea for tomorrow!!! I also got two boxes of individually Cheezits from my work that was left over from today. Make sure to get all your cookies, brownies, candy etc before 2!!! Kroger is selling it CHEAP!
See ya'll tomorrow!
See ya'll tomorrow!
Howdy and Thank You! to all you Aggies who came down to RMH for Valentines Day dinner! We really appreciated your help and support (and Tea!) and hope you had a good time, too!
