How much are you paying for a "doc" fee?

My dad put in his order and was taken back a bit at the $399 documentation fee......like the dealership isn't making enough at MSRP????

So what are people out there paying?

Mine was only $45. Did the $399 include the license fee also?

The finance lady said that Washington State limits the Doc fee that dealers can charge, so mine was $39.00.

I got mine in GA & the doc fee was either $300 or $399 which was non-negotiable. They also tried to charge me a $500 dealer prep fee which I talked down to zero.

Depends on what you get for the fee.
Mine was 150.00, but it included tags and registration costs,
so I paid about 50.00 to not have to stand in line all day at motor vehichles to file paperwork.. seemed like a fair price to me.

What are you getting for all of that money ?

I refused to pay the doc fee on my last two cars. I told the dealer I was going to walk if I had to pay the doc fee. Their response was that everyone has to pay the fee and it's the same for everyone. I then proceeded to thank them for their time and walk out.
Guess what happened... I still had to pay the doc fee... but they took off the $400 elsewhere. On the mini, I got $300 off and free mats.
On the fixed price Scion I bought... they took $400 off of the options I purchased.

We all need to fight these BS charges.. They even have advertising fees now! You have to pay for them to advertise.. I would rather walk than pay these fees.

When I bought my '05 MCS from Knauz, I did the same thing as MikeM53: after all the other negotiations are complete, if you make this fee a deal-breaker and you're willing to walk away, then they'll reduce the amount of this fee from some other item. (Seems like eliminating this fee from the line item reflects poorly on their evaluations.)

It's no fun being a jerk, but it's also no fun paying for large profit margins as a part of being polite and reasonable with car salesmen.
Doc fees are pure profit for the dealer, and I agree they're B.S.

Zero at Ralph Schomp, Denver. In this dealer's 65 year history he has never charged doc or prep or any kind of add-on fees, from the lowliest Honda to the priciest Bimmer. Schomp rocks! Jimbo

PS remember the "Destination Charge" everyone pays on their cars means factory to *consumer*, not factory to dealer. The costs for paperwork regarding title and tags, as well as preparing the car for delivery to YOU the consumer, are worked into this Destination Charge. Anything else is pure profit.

Ok, they are throwing in $400 worth of accessories that my dad ordered, so I guess it evens out to getting the car at msrp.

Flow Mini in NC wants me to pay a $459 DOC Fee. This was just disclosed prior to delivery. I asked before ordering and they did not disclose this.
