Just so everyone has a better idea of what a pathtag looks like:

Happy Birthday!

I'm sure we can do a quick overview about geocaching sometime during the meet and greet. With everyone having different GPSr I can't claim expertise on each and every model (or any, besides the one I have), but I know my wife and I can at least get everyone started- I'll even bring some handouts! Just make sure you know how to enter coordinates i.e. create a waypoint using longitude and latitude to minutes and seconds. As we get closer I'll try to remember to post something about what you should bring (like Buji block and Buji wash) to make it more enjoyable.

Once you've tried it (geocaching) I'm sure you'll go again. It adds to the reasons you go to visit places you haven't been. Many caches are easier than others for those not inclined to tromp thru the woods but many of those in the woods are just off the beaten path or trail. The hints will make it easier & once you've found a few it gets easier as you start thinkin' like the one who placed the cache. It won't be long 'til you want to hide one yourself.

Hope to see you at the event- it is a quick smiley, a way to meet fellow cachers, and the only place to get a pathtag. Just remember to post a "will attend" on Geocaching.com for GC18RTT.

Hey Geocachers! Pathtags are in hand and look good! My wife and I should be over 1,000 finds by the Dragon and are looking forward to meeting and greeting everyone!

What a great way to spend a Saturday!

OMG! I love the pathtag! They're first come first serve, right? 'Cause I really want 2 of them.

Glad you like them! Yes, They will be available at the meet & greet on a first come first served basis. Since I only ordered 50 I think, to be fair, I'll limit everyone to only 2.

I don't know. It was on Snooter's wonderful MOTD website, on geocaching.com, and posted here for close to forever.

I asked Mark to add this to the event planner. It is now up.

I found my first cache yesterday. Quickly followed by a 3 part multi-cache.

I've signed up, although I still need to get my GPS, buy.com kicked my order back because I'm trying to ship to a military base. :(
One way or another I'll have it by the dragon though.

I will say that because the 350 is primarily an automotive GPS, geocaching with it may be a bit difficult. When I've tried, the unit has tried to keep me on roads, which doesn't work for caching... I have an eTrex Legend C which works pretty well. If you really want to get started in geocaching with the least amount of money, the Garmin Geko 101 works as a good starter.

http://tinyurl.com/5ucdgk - Garmin Geko 101 for 54$ shipped on eBay.

Brief overview of the Garmin lines:

Garmin Geko series - Discontinued, but can still find them out there. Nice cheap entry level unit. May have a small basemap, but really more for just marking the trail you've been on and going geocaching.

Garmin eTrex - Some of the older monochrome are discontinued, once again, ebay :D, the newer ones range from having a simple basemap (i.e. roads, but if you're using it for geocaching, who needs roads?) to having expandable memory for downloading maps and routing capabilities.

Garmin Rino - Built in FRS/GMRS radio, and with multiple Rino units, you can send your location to one another. I don't know much about these units, but I do want to get one to try it out. :D

Good Summary... I purchased my base ETrex H for less that $100 and while bare bones it is great for caching. I'm just taking a little time to figure out the differences between it and the Venture Cx I had before.

I am suprised, it has actually been working pretty well for me. There is a mode that you can change it to (Route preference: off-road, Vehicle: pedestrian) that makes a world of difference. I'm up to 20 finds now! My brother-in-law has a new e-trex vista and the nuvi has actually been more accurate a number of times. Maybe some day it might be time for a dedicated device, but for now I am quite happy!

Looking forward to caching in the mountians! I have already loaded in the closest 500 waypoints to Fontana!

Hmm. It's been a while since I tried, so the firmware may have fixed the problem. Glad to hear it's working well for you!
