I'm in there with some of my MINI friends from Denver. Direct route is around 1,000 miles but we are not doing the direct route this year. Denver, Omaha, Kansas City, Saint Louis, Indianapolis, Corbin, KY to Dragon. Back roads all the way. I don't know how far that will be but you can bet we will have a great time. More information here.

This will be the 5th time I've gone to the Dragon in May. I drive from Los Angeles to Fort Walton Beach, FL (approximately 2,100 miles), then up to Fontana Village, another 600 miles, for a grand total of approximately 2,700 miles.

I was given a lovely award at last year's MOTD for motoring the furthest to attend.

I typed in Travis AF Base, CA to Fontana Dam, NC, and got this route. It is CA through Nevada, Utah, Wyoming, Nebraska, Iowa, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, to North Carolina.

It is very similar to a route I took in 2003. After driving from Cali to Santa Fe, New Mexico, I motored up to meet Yucca Patrol in Fort Collins, CO. We went up to Wyoming and drove through Nebraska, Iowa, Missouri, then Arkansas, Mississippi, on to Birmingham, AL before going up to the Dragon.

Hmmm CClo, I wonder if a direct drive to the Dragon should not be valued higher. IE this drive from Travis AFB seems to be the longest drive to the dragon. IE The Weekend before the Dragon I thought about driving to Philly for a few days and that would be 1400 miles. But my drive to the dragon from Chattanooga is about 120 miles, so I would only count that.

Would that mean you are actually driving 600 miles to the Dragon?

Plus I would love it if people listed themselves individually with a google or yahoo maps distance measurement from their house to Fontana Village.

No, Herbert. Whatever time it takes me to get there, my road trip's centerpiece and destination is arriving at and attending the Dragon.

Just because I stop in FL on the way doesn't mean I am only driving 600 miles to get to MOTD. I actually reside in Los Angeles, California and I drive I-10 across the country to FL, stop and work on MOTD stuff, then drive from FL through AL, GA, and TN to Fontana, NC. It is not like I'm going somewhere out of the way to "take credit" for driving farther to the Dragon.

I stop in FL specifically to work on the various events I'm co-organizing for MOTD, then continue on my route, which I've done ever since 2004. The first year, 2003, I took a very much more convoluted route, but it was with the Dragon as my destination, as this year's destination also is.

If anyone is taking I-40 east through Oklahoma on the way to the dragon, please, for the love of God, stop at the Hungry Traveller restaurant in Henryetta Oklahoma and have a piece of the most amazing fudge pie you've ever tasted (best with ice cream). And if you are really nice, bring me a piece (or a while pie!) to the dragon!

Well, I'm no where near some of you but, from Williamsport, PA to Fontana Village is 674 miles. I'm heading out Friday morning, and coming back Sunday morning. Not to mention all the driving I can get in on Saturday. That makes around 1500 or so miles in three days time. No record, but probably most I've ever done in such a short period.

One way is roughly 600 miles for me...a drop in the bucket compared to anyone's west of the Mississippi.

I guess i would have to agree. Although I may live 3 miles away from my place of employment, and I go to get fuel at a station that is 2 miles in the other direction (remember, my ultimate goal is to get to work!), Would this now mean that I have a 7 mile commute distance to work?

At most events I've attended that had any type of "Distance award", the general rule was the most direct route from Ones place of residence as listed on their DL, to the event locale. Which is what I believe Moskito is asking

Well, I'm from just south of DC in Alexandria VA. About 545 miles.. But I'm doing it twice in two weeks plus some.

I've got a family wedding in Atlanta to go to two weekends before MOTD. So.. I'm taking my folks from MD down to the wedding (in the Land Yacht), and making a week road trip out of it. Doing the Biltmore, then after the weekend wedding in Atlanta taking the folks to see the Dragon and the area. We'll stay a night at Fontana and then do a night in Gatlinburg on the way back. I'm home 3 days then turn around and drive back down for MOTD!

My home to Fontana Village would be 2258.3 miles. That's why I gotta fly!

It's great that some are willing and able to road trip so far to MOTD.

Good thing this is an event for Charity, which i believe makes expenses and mileage tax-deductible

No it is not for charity, some of the events are for charity, but I don't believe any of the registration fees for MOTD, banquet dinner, BBQ are related to a charity.
